Is Anne Bonny and Mary Read (Archer) really only tier 3?

I could be wrong, but I feel like the rating for the archer Anne/Mary is a bit unfair. It feels like the review was too hung up on the "low HP gimmick".

Is it wrong to look at the low HP damage bonus as simply a bonus, and not as something that you *have* to base your playstyle on? The base damage of her NP (without the HP bonus thing) is exactly the same as the base damage of the Kiyo Lancer and Rama's NPs, who are also ST Buster SR servants that got a higher rating on the tier list. Just because Rama's NP happens to also do extra damage against demons, it doesn't mean that we should call it a "demon gimmick NP" and downrate him. It's a positive thing that the NP is capable of doing bonus damage, and not a bad thing.

If we just completely ignore the low HP bonus, and look at Anne's kit objectively, she seems pretty solid. Her attack/hp are solid for her class and rarity. Her star generation and np generation are both good. Her star weight is above average. Her first skill is a really nice party-wide attack buff that can also increase star generation. Her second skill gains 15 stars and vastly increases her star absorption, so it's basically a crit on demand. And her Independent Action is A+, which is higher than all of the other SR archers, so she crits pretty hard too. And her third skill is yet another attack buff with a no time limit guts attached to it. Instead of looking at the guts as "part of her gimmick", why not just look at it as something great that can save her life if she dies? And the no time limit means you don't have to worry about trying to time it correctly or anything. You can just toss it on at the beginning of the battle, and then you've got death protection the whole time. What's nice about that is that the skill itself is only a 5 turn cooldown, so it will probably be available again before you're actually in any danger of dying. So then you can just apply it again right after the first guts triggers, and you can effectively use guts twice in a row. She also applies a defense debuff with her NP, which is a nice little bonus.

I could be missing something, but that all sounds pretty positive to me. The only weaknesses listed in the write up on this site seem pretty contrived. One is that her low HP playstyle is too risky. But an easy answer to that is to not use a stupid playstyle, and just use Anne as a regular servant. The other supposed weakness mentioned is literally "NP Damage Scaling is by NP Level". Wtf? Of course her NP damage is dependent on her NP level. That is literally the case for every servant who has an NP that does damage... If you have to make up a stupid "weakness" like that to try to find something bad to say about a servant, doesn't that mean that the servant probably deserves to be bumped up a tier level?

Once again, I may be overlooking or misunderstanding something, so if I'm wrong, please correct me. Also, I'm sorry that this is such a long post.

She's poorer when compared to other archers though, sadly including Emiya (when fully strengthened and 10/10/10). But that is besides the point.

Took a look at tier 3 again. If you really look at it all the servants on there fall under the category of solid with potential to be amazing in teams built to enhance their strengths but not terribly versatile otherwise or lacking in straightforward steroids. Every dps in tier 1 has amazingly easy to use and straightforward steroids which is what allows them to function independent of comp. Tier 2 have decent steroid or support rolls they exceed at but need help covering one or two weaknesses at most. Tier 3 on the other hand have no steroid or poor steroid when compared to their peers as well as having other "weaknesses" which aren't weaknesses so much as comp issues. They are unable to function to their full degree outside of comps built around them. This doesn't mean they are non functional or bad but rather just means that unlike those in tier 1, they are dependent on help and support to maximize their use.

Same thing actually applies to the 5 star tiers. Like the tier lists are almost always just a general ranking based on how broadly a servant can fit into different comps. It's why waver is universally 1 or 2 among all servants in most tier lists while (to use another servant that is ranked low on tier but works amazingly when a comp is built around her) say Tama lancer barely cracks top 20 if that. It's why one should absolutely look into the servant in question with more detail just as you've done to find out exactly how and where and when the servant is best used. It definitely isn't as simple as saying "oh these are all tier 1 servants so they'll form the best comp" or "oh she's tier 5 though. Damn why's she so useless"

But how does Anne fall into the category of having poor, unstraightforward steroids? She can boost her own attack by 45% for 3 turns, on a 5 turn cooldown. Is there even a such thing as a less straightforward steroid than straight up +attack? That's a massive boost to everything she does (her hits, her crits, and her NP), for three turns and with a short cooldown. How does that not stomp her SR competitors steroids into the ground? Emiya only gets a 40% steroid, and it's only for 1 turn. Nobu only gets 50% to crits, which is useless if she doesn't crit and does nothing for her NP. I'd take Anne's +45% to everything any day of the week (plus Anne has a higher level of Independent Action anyway, so her crits should be comparable to Nobu). Or, since it's actually split up into two skills, you could even stagger them, to have a moderate steroid that's constantly active. And her second skill is pretty straightforward too. It gains 15 stars and increases your star absorption. So if you feel like critting something, you use it.

Otherwise, what exactly are Anne's weaknesses or comp issues, that warrant sticking her in tier 3? She seems fairly self sufficient, and can even provide a bit of support on the side. She provide stars for herself decently well. She can buff her own damage very well. She can charge her own NP gauge decently well. She has a no time limit guts, so she can survive on her own decently well. She has potentially one of the best party-wide support buffs in the game, so she even has function as a support, which most of her competitors can't do.

I'm not arguing, so much as just trying to understand. It just feels like, based on the tier criteria that you just mentioned, and based on the facts, she should be higher than tier 3.

I had to read her talents again to check it xD. 45% per turn would have been insane lol! But you meant 45% in total across the 3 turns I'm sure. Which becomes 20% at level 10. While attack ups are nice, and beach flower in particular qualifies as an excellent attack up (and on the plus side benefits the group as well). 20% is comparable even to Gilgamesh actually with the added benefit of the crit gen increase to males. However, I don't believe anything is considered amazing steroid unless it's 30%+. Typically you don't see it on attack ups with the notable exception being imperial privilege. More often you see it on card type ups and typically it's only for a turn.

As for her crit gather, Anne Bonny is hurt by the fact that it is only for 1 turn. With Gil it's 3, with Raikou it's 3, with Saberlot it's 3. Not to mention there's no active buff attached to her crit damage other than her passive independent riding. Don't get me wrong at A+ it's one of the best passive crit buffs you can get but again typical steroid crit buffs are for one turn only (you see exceptions such as waver's) and are at least for 50%. Heck emiya's crit buff (next best Archer after her) is for 90% post strengthening.

Lastly, guts is considered the weakest of the three death avoidance mechanics. Both invuln and evade are considered better active mitigation options on most tier lists. It's rare for guts to be held in high regard and only 2 servants have guts skills held in high regard, OG Nero and Herc. The reason they're held in high regard too is because of just how many guts they get. A&M's guts is certainly very very good but it is a level below those 2's.

In summation, her talents are good but not the best. Her lack of major self steroid hurts her placement in the tier lists. Even so, I actually do believe you could make a strong case for her to be tier 2. But take a look some time at tier 2 and you'll see that a lot of tier 2 is disputable as well. I believe the real issue is how much one weighs farm (which A&M isn't the best at) versus boss killing. It's why a servant like Fran makes it to tier 2 in all likelihood even though she's really bad at surviving and has like one thing she's good at (her np smacks farm mobs like a truck. That's it. One trick pony gets tier 2)

I actually did mean 45% per turn. She gets a 19.5% attack buff from her first skill, and a 25.5% attack buff from her third skill, and they both last 3 turns with a 5 turn cool down. If you use them in conjunction, don't they stack additively to result in a 45%, 3 turn steroid?

I agree that the crit gather would be nicer if it were three turns, but she is an archer, so her natural absorption is already much better than Raikou and Saberlots. I usually use it moreso in situations where my team doesn't have any stars, rather than when we do. Because it also gains 15 stars when it amps up your absorption, it's kind of just like a crit-on-demand. You're almost gauranteed at least one crit if you use that skill, starting from 0 stars. Sometimes being able to have that extra controlled burst can be nice when it looks like I'm going to come up just a wee bit short of clearing a wave or something, and I don't want to have to use another full turn to do so.

As far as an active crit buff goes, this could just be me being ignorant about the damage calculations, but on a critical hit, isn't +45% attack going to result in the same thing as +45% crit damage?

And I'll certainly agree that evade is nicer than guts, but the guts does have one advantage. Since it had no duration limit, you can always have it actively protecting you, so there is less chance of unexpectedly getting surprised by a crit and dying. Plus, since the skill itself does come off of cooldown even while effect is still active, you can actually use it twice in a row, depending on the situation. Though guts certainly does have it's weaknesses.

It is and HOLY SHIT then. 45% is bonkers. Sorry I don't have her so I keep having to relook at her page to see her talents. Didn't see the attack up part of it. Yea I don't get it either. Now my assessment of her has her on the cusp of tier 1...if not tier 1. Like wtf. God their tier lists are so dated

Lol. I really think that whoever did her writeup and ranked her was just blinded by the "NP does more damage at lower health" thing.

That reply was a little negative. So here's a good reason ALL archers are useful

I didn't really see it as negative. I was just hoping for something a bit more specific and example-based, I think. But I do appreciate that you answered.

Honestly it's hard to since the tier 2 and tier 3 of the 4*s is ridiculous dated. For example...why the hell is Rama in tier 2 with a similar skill set to A&M Archer but with smaller numbers in all 3 skills, in tier 2 while she is in tier 3...the only 4* tier I agree with is tier 1.

I gotcha. And I apologise if I sounded ungrateful, or combative or something. I was just legitimately trying to understand A&M's flaws, because the writeup on them didn't actually mention any specific flaws, other than the extremely contrived ones.

Oh you didn't sound that way at all. If anything this was extremely informative! Like I knew some of that part of the tier list was suspect but I didn't think it was that bad haha

Rama has a 100% crit damage buff though which gives him far more damage than Anne also about 10% more base attack after accounting for the class modifier.

His 100% crit buff gives him far more damage than Anne for one turn, and only if he crits. That isn't necessarily better, it's just different. Anne has a higher star weight, so it's easier for her to get more crits throughout a fight, and her 45% damage buff works even when she doesn't crit, and lasts for 3 rounds, and it boosts her NP damage too.

I agree that they are rated too poorly. I have both rider and archer pirate duos and I never strive to lower hp before np and am usually happy with the result. I really love the skills for archer and rather wish that was the set on rider too.

Lol, yeah, I think there are very few scenarios where I would want to intentionally lower my servants' HP down to 1 just to double the strength of their single target NP. Might as well just keep them alive long enough to use their NP twice.

Tier lists are there to compare servants strength so rather than being tier 3 so bad its just compared to other servants of it falls short so that being the case what we should look at is what 4* archers are ranked higher than her rather than her actual placement on the tier.

That being the case what we find are there are 3 of them - Tristan, Oda, and Kuro. So first up if we look at Tristan its immediately obvious he provides far more utility than Anne with the broken harp of healing skill, a 50% NP charge skill which will always be strong, and the ability to remove enemy buffs as well as a sure hit NP both of which are incredibly useful.

Looking at Nobu we see a similar thing - a powerful crit skill that gives her a 50% crit damage buff already lets her damage buffs surpass Anne so long as you keep her supplied with crit strars, an incredible 100% damage buff to divine enemies and a LOT of sabers are divine which combines with her anti-riding NP(which a lot of sabers also have) to let Nobu put out surprisingly high damage. Finally a 30% NP gen buff to the whole party is excellent and supports Nobu's already excellent NP gain allowing her to spam it. As for Kuro I don't think I need to explain why she's better right?

I was thinking this way initially too but look at some of the non archers in tier 2. Some of them are very questionable and not a lot better or not better than A&M Archer at all. I actually tend to agree with Fear3d's assessment now that they overlooked the rest of her kit judging her only on the gimmick and do think they need to update the tier lists slightly.

Tristan is so different from Anne that I don't know if it's really even fair to compare them though. I mean, you can obviously compare them, but I don't think that their spots on the tier list should be based on their comparisons, since they are used so differently. I don't see a good reason why they couldn't both share the same tier. Tristan is a support archer, and Anne is a buster based damage dealing archer. And if anything, I would argue the case that Tristan actually is more niche than Anne, because a support archer isn't something you can just really slot into any old team. A support oriented servant with such a high star weight kind of limits your options, and can be a detriment in some situations.

Nobu's 50% crit buff is vastly inferior to Anne's 45% attack buff, in my opinion. Especially since Anne has 3% higher independent action, so Nobu's crits only wind up like 2% higher. Having 2% higher crits is not worth having 45% weaker non-crits and NP, in almost any situation. The Divine damage buff is great... When you are fighting Divine enemies. When you aren't fighting Divine enemies, it is 100% useless and a waste of a skill slot. Anne has no skills that are wasted in any situation, so it's not really accurate to say that Nobu's Divine buff is better than what Anne has to offer. It's just better in certain situations. Anne's kit is better in other situations, and is more universal. In fact, since the lower tier servants are supposed to be more niche, and less universal, I'd almost consider that an argument for Nobu to be lower tier than Anne. And the NP gen buff is great too, but who is to say that it's better than what Anne can do? I'm sure there are situations where her party-wide attack buff, star generation buff, or her guts are more desirable... So they are just different. As far as the rider thing goes, once again, it can be super useful in some situations, and super useless in others. If you're fighting a single target who isn't a rider, then Anne's NP will do more damage at NP1 than Nobu's will do at NP5, and if Anne happens to be injured, the difference will be even larger. So once again, I think it's not really accurate to say that one is better than the other, and there is no good reason why they couldn't share the same tier. Though I'd say that Anne's kit is actually more universal, so if we were to say that higher tiered servants can be useful in any situation, an argument could be made that Anne actually deserves a higher tier than Nobu.

The criteria for a tier 2 SR, on this site, says: "Solid servants that can perform their role reasonably well. They may have one or two weaknesses which need to be compensated for by support servants." I don't see any way in which Anne doesn't meet that criteria. If anything, the fact that nobody has really pointed out any obvious weaknesses about her makes it seem sort of like she is even overqualified for tier 2. "Risky game plan and niche" is really not acceptable as a weakness, because there is no good reason to try to limit this servant to a game plan of trying to get get HP down to 1 and then firing her NP. And "NP Damage Scaling is by NP Level" is not even a weakness at all, since it applies to like 99% of the servants in the game. The fact that someone wrote that really just highlights this servants' lack of weaknesses. "She is worse at healing people than Tristan" and "She is worse at killing waves of Divine Riders than Nobu" really don't count as weaknesses either. If someone needs to fill those two niches, then obviously it's better to use Tristan or Nobu, but for general non-niche situations, I don't see why Anne would be any worse than either of those two, and she even seems better in a lot of ways.

It’s a subjective tier list, the great thing about this game is that you can use whoever you want so tier lists literally mean nothing.

Totally agree with you that Anne and Mary summer should be placed higher. In fact, she's similar to ozy whereby their buffs are up 3 out of every 5 turns.

I seriously hope her second skill would get a buff as instinct simply isn't a good skill on a damage dealer especially if it's added to a star gather skill.

She needs babysitting though so tier 2 is the perfect spot for her similar to saberlot - they do consistent damage during their uptime but fizzles away during their down time. Saberlot has ridiculous numbers on his skills though so tier 1 is the right place for him.
