No, you're not doomed. The Nerofest event just so happens to be a very good event for farming ascension materials hence why using apples is highly encouraged. I think with proper planning of which materials you'll be targeting, it's possible to wing through the event with 6 golden apples as the event itself will also give apples upon initial clearing of a stage.
