Overview

“On my name as the Knight of the Sun, I shall deliver victory to you.”

The wielder of the Sword of the Sun, and a fiercely loyal member of the Knights of the Round Table, Gawain is a dedicated AoE Buster damage dealer.

Gawain is the first Servant to introduce abilities that are enhanced when on specific stages. In Gawain’s case, his signature Numeral of the Saint grants a bonus (up to 30%) Buster buff on stages that are sunny (morning to noon). Furthermore, his first two skills can boost his and the party’s attack damage. Meanwhile, his NP gain is assisted by a flat 20% NP charge on Belt of Bertilak, allowing for turn 1 NPs when equipped with Kaleidoscope. As a result, he’s great for quickly clearing smaller enemy waves with the AoE of Excalibur Galatine. His triple Buster card deck also enables more stable damage outside of burst turns.

As an added bonus, his NP also inflicts Skill Seal and Burn, offering a bit of utility to the team.

Unfortunately, even with all his damage boosts active, his NP is still outclassed in damage by Servants like Altria Pendragon (Alter), partly due to his lack of an NP Interlude. His potential is also reduced outside of sunny stages, where he loses access to his Buster buff on Numeral of the Saint. In addition, the sole survivability skill he has is an unwieldy 1-turn Guts that is tied to his NP charge, which means Masters often have to choose one effect or the other based on the situation.

Overall, Gawain is a decent AoE Buster damage dealer who improves in specific stages where the sun shines. His capacity to farm with an NP charge and the special effects on his NP also add to his usefulness, especially if he is supported by powerful Buster Supports. He may not be perfect, but when he shines, he scorches.

Strengths

High Buster Damage

Gawain has three Buster cards in his deck plus a Buster AoE NP, with self / party Attack buffs and a situational Buster buff (sunny open fields only). He is more than likely to be able to NP-B-B chain, and generally has good damage output on a turn by turn basis.

NP Charge Skill

Gawain has an on demand self-NP charge skill that allows him to NP right off the bat with a Kaleidoscope. This greatly aids him in his role as an effective farming Servant.

Skill Seal on NP

Gawain can inflict the Skill Seal status on all enemies for 1 turn with his NP. Against enemies that have troublesome skills such as Evade/Invincibility, Stuns, Guts, or NP gauge drain, Excalibur Galatine can prevent them from being used. This can be a double-edged sword, however, as some enemies’ skills are less harmful than their normal attacks (e.g. Berserker bosses).

Scaling Burn on Overcharge

Gawain’s burn effect on NP scales pretty decently with Overcharge. While Burn is normally not very impactful, it can be useful for stages with immense damage reduction or in combination with Burn Damage Up from Tomoe Gozen or Kiyohime (post Rank Up).

Weaknesses

Performance is Limited by Stage

Gawain performs best when he has access to his 30% Buster Up buff when in an open, sunny field. Otherwise, his performance is much reduced, underperforming when compared to other Servants of the same class and rarity.

Guts Only Lasts 1 Turn & Tied to NP Charge

Although Gawain has some survivability built into his kit in the form of Guts on his third skill, the Guts only lasts for 1 turn, which can make using it a bit of a gamble if the enemies don’t choose to attack him. His Guts is also tied to his 20% NP gauge charge skill, which means you sometimes may need to choose between having him NP this turn or making use of the guts.

Limited NP Gain Potential

With a “gorilla” deck of BBBAQ, Gawain has limited means to charge his NP Gauge by himself aside from the 20% from his skill. His high base NP Gain and resulting extraordinary NP Gain on his Extra card, make him rather dependant on drawing an Extra chain that starts with his Arts card.

Level Up Skill Recommendation

Maxing any of Gawain’s skills are not necessary for him to perform his job, as some of the most important effects of his skills are flat across levels.  At the same time, all of Gawain’s skills improve his overall performance, even if the benefits from leveling are situational or relatively small. His skills can be leveled if Masters enjoy using him and wish to optimize his performance.

  • Numeral of The Saint EX – The Attack buff on this skill is flat across level. What changes is the Buster bonus on sunny open field stages. The Buster buff notably increases his performance, although sunny open field stages are somewhat situational, so this skill can be leveled second or last.
  • Charisma E – The attack bonus on his rank of Charisma is relatively weak. If it were higher, this skill would be higher priority. Unfortunately, with a 6% bonus at base (12% at max), his performance will not change too drastically with levels. However, it is still worth raising if Masters want to squeeze out the best performance possible and the cooldown reduction is rather useful in longer fights.
  • Belt of Bertilak EX – Raising this skill is useful to decrease the cooldown of his NP gauge charge move, while providing a little more bonus C. Stars each time this skill is used. Since this is probably his least situational skill that has the most effect if he used for longer fights, this would be his most impactful to level.

Craft Essence Recommendation

Due to his suitability for being a fast farming Servant, Gawain benefits greatly from Craft Essences with Starting NP Gauge. Alternatively, he can pump up his damage with Buster Performance Up or NP Damage Up effects.

  • Kaleidoscope / The Imaginary Element: Gawain benefits the most from a Kaleidoscope, which when combined with his third skill, allows him to NP immediately at turn 1. This is good to run on him when farming.

  • Partake with the King / First Sunrise: This CE provides a hybrid of starting NP and Buster buff, both of which are useful for Gawain’s overall performance especially if his conditional buff does not trigger.

  • Holy Night Supper: This CE provides both starting NP (50%), and a small boost to both NP damage and critical damage, which Gawain can take advantage of using the stars generated from Belt of Bertilak. The NP Damage also scales well with Buster Supports.

  • Limited/Zero Over / Hero Elly’s Adventure / Verdant Sound of Destruction: Buster performance buffs help bolster his primary source of damage (3 Buster cards + Buster NP).

  • The Black Grail: For those seeking to maximize Gawain’s NP damage, The Black Grail provides the largest raw damage boost.

  • Victor of the Moon / Joint Recital: Gives both Buster performance (10%/15%) and Crit damage bonus (20%/25%). With the stars generated by his third skill, he can somewhat take advantage of the bonus Crit damage on this CE as well.
