Attack / HP Growth
The wielder of the Sword of the Sun, and a fiercely loyal member of the Knights of the Round Table, Gawain enters the pool of Servants with the release of Camelot. He is a dedicated AoE Buster damage dealer. He also is the first Servant to introduce abilities that are enhanced when on specific stages. In Gawain’s case, his first skill becomes much more powerful in open field stages that are sunny (morning to noon), where his Buster damage rises by up to 30%. In other situations, he is decent, with his 3-Buster card set giving him consistent damage per turn. His first two skills can further boost his and the party’s attack damage. Unfortunately, even with all his damage boosts active, his NP is still outclassed in damage by Servants like Altria Pendragon (Alter). His damage mostly comes from his Buster card deck, which enables more stable damage outside of burst turns.
His NP gain is assisted by a flat 20% NP charge on his third skill (which also means with a Kaleidoscope, he can NP right off the bat). With an AoE NP, he’s great for clearing smaller enemy waves as a result. The NP gain on his single Arts card isn’t too terrible, due to his relatively high NP generation rate, along with his high Extra card hitcount, which makes opening his Brave chains with an Arts card the best for generating NP.
Excalibur Galatine, his Noble Phantasm, is Buster-type and inflicts Skill Seal and Burn, offering a bit of utility when enemies have pesky skills (Evade/Invincibility) or extremely high defense ratings during some future challenge quests, which makes flat damage (such as Burn) a viable option.
Overall, Gawain is a decent AoE Buster damage dealer who improves in specific stages where the sun shines. His great farming ability and the special effects on his NP also add some utility. He may not be perfect, but when he shines, he scorches.
Unfortunately, unlike most AoE Sabers, he does not get an NP strengthening Interlude, although that may change in the future.
High Buster Damage
He has three Buster cards in his deck plus a Buster AoE NP, with self / party Attack buffs and a situational Buster buff (sunny open fields only). He is more likely to be able to NP-B-B chain, and generally has good damage output on a turn by turn basis.
NP Charge Skill
He has an on demand self-NP charge skill that allows him to NP right off the bat with a Kaleidoscope. This increases his utility as an efficient farming unit.
Skill Seal on NP
He can inflict the Skill Seal status on all enemies for 1 turn with his NP. Against enemies that have troublesome skills such as Evade/Invincibility, Stuns, Guts, or NP gauge drain, this can prevent those from happening. This can be a double-edged sword, however, as some enemies’ skills are less harmful than their normal attacks (e.g. Ibaraki raid boss).
Performance is Limited by Stage
He performs best when he has access to his 30% Buster Up buff when in an open, sunny field. Otherwise, his performance is only decent at best.
Guts Only Lasts 1 Turn & Tied to NP Charge
Although he has some survivability built into his kit in the form of Guts on his third skill, the Guts only lasts for 1 turn, which can make using it a bit of a gamble if the enemies don’t choose to attack him. His Guts is also tied to his 20% NP gauge charge skill, which means you sometimes may need to choose between having him NP this turn while sacrificing the chance to have Guts on a later turn, or saving the Guts for an enemy NP turn and postponing Gawain’s NP.
Craft Essence Recommendation
OVERALL: Gawain benefits the most from craft essences with either a Starting NP gauge effect, or with a Buster Performance Up effect. Below are some examples of CEs that accomplish this, along with some other supplemental effects that are of secondary use.
Kaleidoscope / The Imaginary Element: Gawain benefits the most from a Kaleidoscope, which when combined with his third skill, allows him to NP immediately at round start. This is good to run on him when farming.
Halloween Princess / His Rightful Place / Golden Captures the Carp: These give a balance between starting NP (50%), and boosting NP damage or some C. Star support.
Limited/Zero Over / Verdant Sound of Destruction: Buster performance buffs would help bolster his primary source of damage (3 Buster cards + Buster NP).
Victor to the Moon: Gives both Buster performance (10%/15%) and Crit damage bonus (20%/25%). With the flat C. Star generation on his third skill, he can somewhat take advantage of the bonus Crit damage on this CE as well.
Maiden Leading Chaldea: This gives a mix of Buster performance (10%/15%) and flat C. Stars per turn (3/4), exchanging the bonus damage from Crits for more consistent C. Stars per turn.
True Samadhi Fire: A combined Buster buff (8%/10%) and NP damage buff (15%/20%) will best enhance the damage on his NP burst turn.
Level Up Skill Recommendation
Numeral of The Saint EX – The Attack buff on this skill is flat across level. What changes is the Buster bonus on sunny open field stages. The Buster buff notably increases his performance, although sunny open field stages are somewhat situational, so this skill would not be as high priority unless you are encountering many stages in which the bonus would be relevant.
Charisma E – The attack bonus on his rank of Charisma is relatively weak. If it were higher, this skill would be high priority. Unfortunately, with a 6% bonus at base (12% at max), performance would not change too drastically with levels. However, it is still worth raising if you want to squeeze out the best performance possible.
Belt of Bertilak EX – Raising this skill is useful to decrease the cooldown of his NP gauge charge move, while providing a little more bonus C. Stars each time this skill is used. Since this is probably his least situational skill that has the most effect, this would be the first recommended skill to level.
