Attack / HP Growth
Lu Bu Fengxian, the famous Chinese hero from the Three Kingdoms era, is the epitome of a glass cannon Servant. Boasting a high ATK value as well as a multitude of offensive buffs, he is able to deal damage rivaling that of higher-rarity Berserkers. His Noble Phantasm in particular is highly formidable, especially considering the ease of achieving NP5. Additionally, Lu Bu’s third skill adds the ability to perform critical hits reliably and further empowers his NP, though at the cost of making his allies more vulnerable for one turn.
On the other hand, Lu Bu suffers from all the major weaknesses of the Berserker class, which are primarily low survivability, low NP gain, and to some extent, the lack of critical star generation. In fact, he possesses a lower HP value compared even to other 3-star Berserkers, and his 25% defense buff does not make up for the Berserker-class vulnerability. His NP’s built-in stun may be beneficial in some situations, but it is often unreliable at best; it’s risky to count on the stun especially when used on the same turn as a defensive skill. All in all, Lu Bu is a Servant with incredible damage potential, but a huge amount of support is needed to let him perform at his best.
High NP Damage
A combination of high ATK, the Berserker-class modifier, various offensive buffs, and an easily-maxed NP level means that Lu Bu’s Noble Phantasm hits very, very hard, especially considering it is single-target. To put things into perspective, his NP5 damage roughly equals that of an NP2 Sakata Kintoki, who is a 5-star Servant.
Lu Bu’s third skill allows him to perform reliable critical hits for one turn. Coupled with his buffs, this allows him to perform extremely high-damage NP Brave chains, which makes him ideal for one turn kill strategies. On the other hand, as the critical absorption bonus only lasts for one turn, he is not an ideal critical damager choice for prolonged fights, especially considering his low survivability.
A weakness shared with all other Berserkers, Lu Bu receives 2x damage from most enemies, making him extremely easy to kill. In certain stages, a critical hit from the stage boss may be able to eliminate him instantly. Although his defense buff helps a bit with this, external aid is crucial to ensuring his survival.
Long Burst Downtime
Despite possessing good NP gain stats, Lu Bu only has one Arts card, which hampers his ability to benefit from Arts chains. He also possesses no NP charge skill. When his low survivability is considered as well he is generally only able to unleash his powerful NP once in a fight, unless the team is able to keep him alive long enough while supporting his NP gain. Similarly, Lu Bu’s critical absorption skill only lasts for one turn and has a fairly long cooldown, thereby creating long gaps between his critical turns.
Low Star Generation Capability
Despite possessing a critical absorption skill, Lu Bu himself has no reliable way to produce critical stars. He has to rely on the help of support Servants or CEs with star generation capabilities to make use of his critical potential.
Craft Essence Recommendation
- Kaleidoscope / The Imaginary Element: Starting NP gauge CEs are generally the best CE choice for Lu Bu as they help mitigate his NP gain problems and potentially allow him to perform an NP Brave chain in the first few turns. While these CEs give him limited benefits in the long run, Lu Bu himself does not usually survive long enough for this to matter.
Golden Sumo: Boulder Tournament, Halloween Princess, Partake with the King: Assuming support Servants with NP charge capabilities (e.g. Zhuge Liang) are available, the amount of starting NP gauge provided by CEs such as Kaleidoscope may prove redundant. In these cases, CEs with less starting NP value, but with additional benefits may be the wiser choice.
Limited/Zero Over, Verdant Sound of Destruction: These CEs are best used in stages where Lu Bu’s NP is not strictly needed, allowing him to dish out more damage from his normal hits. They are also a good option for one turn kill strategies, where Lu Bu’s NP charge is fully taken care of by his allies.
Black Grail / Heaven’s Feel: Aimed at maximizing Lu Bu’s NP damage, these CEs are less commonly used than the above options due to his poor NP gain. However, assuming that the team has sufficient ways to help him charge his NP, these CEs can be used with little problem for massive damage.
Level Up Skill Recommendation
Valor A is a rather straightforward attack buff skill with low cooldown. Leveling this skill should be prioritized over the others in order to make the most of its uptime. Although the mental debuff resistance buff helps in certain situations, it can be considered as more of a bonus.
Defiant B increases Lu Bu’s defense for three turns and is his main durability aid skill. However, due to his low HP stat and his Berserker class, this skill by itself is not enough to make him noticeably durable. Additionally, the built-in demerit conflicts with his first skill, which makes this skill’s timing slightly trickier to use. Use this skill last in a turn to avoid missing any buffs.
Chaotic Villain A provides both a critical absorption and an NP damage buff. This skill is leveled for both the increase in NP damage buff values as well as the cooldown reduction. However, its priority is still below Valor due to the latter’s reliability. This skill’s demerit also means that it must be used with care, as the 20% defense debuff may result in some allies dying earlier than intended.
Suggested Servant Synergies
Note: Lu Bu is pretty similar to Heracles in the general role of a strong independent berserker; he is pretty much Heracles Lite. However, Lu Bu differs in his possible role as a high NP damage nuke.
Kiyohime: If you’re running a Berserker team, Kiyohime fits nicely with Lu Bu due to their relative tankiness from their self-defense buffs, ability to stun the enemies and complementary NP types. Kiyohime’s Stalking debuff doesn’t have a downside if you nuke the target to high hell before they get a chance to respond, while they remain pretty decent frontline Berserkers with their defense buffs.
Zhuge Liang (El Melloi II): An obvious choice, but one of the ways to use Lu Bu is as an ultimate nuke bot, rendered possible through Waver’s NP gauge filling skills. With his NP damage up skill, Lu Bu noticeably outpaces his competition as a budget strong NP nuker. Aside from straight up starting NP charges and such, it’s difficult to consistently build NP gauge on Berserkers with QABBB card sets.
Leonidas: Leonidas’s on demand taunts provide Lu Bu breathing room for when his defense buff is on cooldown. As usual, Leonidas’s deck helps out with Buster chains, and his third skill allows him to support Lu Bu by finishing up Lu Bu’s damage buff trinity with a team-wide Buster buff.
