Like her deeds in the Ulster Cycle, Queen Medb’s niche is dealing with Males. She does particularly well against Male bosses. She has both a Charm that solely works on Male enemies and a single target NP that deals massive damage to Males. Her Golden Rule (Body) gives her good survivability, healing her 3000 HP over 3 turns at max level, as well as being the only Debuff Immunity skill in the game.
Outside of her niche, Medb doesn’t really have much else to offer. Her attack stat is the lowest among the 5-Star Riders. The fact that she is a Rider also means that she soaks up a lot of the critical stars, despite not being a critical damage dealer and merely having average star generation. This limits her to certain team compositions. Nevertheless, if one need a Male Servant dead, you can count on Queen Medb.
Strong Against Male Enemies
There are a multitude of Male Berserkers (and not so many Casters) that Medb’s skills and NP can be used against. She can also Charm Male enemies. In addition, her NP gets high bonus damage against them.
Good NP Gain
Medb has good NP gain off of her Arts cards and in tandem with Golden Rule’s 10% NP gain per turn for 3 turns, gives her the ability to fire NPs off relatively quickly. Her Extra Attack with its hefty 7 hits is also a factor enabling her NP gain.
Medb’s high HP coupled with her Golden Rule’s heal over time allows her to survive taking big damage. As mentioned earlier, when battling against Male enemies she can use her Charm to prevent them from acting, stalling an attack or even a possible NP for one turn. (Note that in the future, the Debuff Prevention she has on her first skill may help against the difficult boss fights with multitudes of debuffs.)
The number of Male Casters used as bosses (where her single target NP shines) are few, and the Male Berserkers can be dealt with using other more well-rounded Servants. Even Euryale, a 3-Star Servant can arguably perform a similar niche as Medb does.
Low Damage in General
Amongst the 5-Star Riders, Medb has the lowest attack. This makes her not the optimal choice in battles outside of her niche. For example, a 3-Star Rider with a single target NP, Ushiwakamaru, at NP level 5 does more damage than Medb at NP level 1. She also lacks a good attack buff outside of her Charisma.
Reliance on Extra Card
Medb’s star generation and NP generation rely on her Extra Card which has a hitcount of 7. This means that one needs to use her Brave chains as much as possible to get the most NP and stars out of her. As getting a Brave chain can’t be guaranteed when the Command cards are distributed, she isn’t very consistent.
- Limited/Zero Over / Verdant Sound of Destruction: We can augment Medb’s low attack by giving her a CE that will make her Buster NP as well as her normal Buster attacks more powerful.
- Little Halloween Devil / Divine Banquet / Prisma Cosmos: Allowing Medb to get her NP faster will be useful in boss battles where she wants to have her NP as soon as possible. These CEs will allow her to charge up her NP even quicker with Golden Rule active.
- Black Grail / Awakened Will: A controversial choice, but her HP healing over time can help offset the demerits of these two CEs, enabling her to deal more damage with her NP or charge her NP faster respectively.
- Charisma will always be a useful skill to have on a short cooldown, because of the attack up it gives to the entire party. At level 10, like almost all Charisma-like skills, there will only be a downtime of 2 turns.
For the next skill to level up, Golden Rule (Body) and Siren Song can both be considered depending on what you are after, though Golden Rule (Body) is comparatively better to Siren Song.
Choose Golden Rule (Body) if you want Medb to have more survivability, as her HP gain per turn increases with each level. Note that the NP gain is set at a constant 10% gain regardless of how much you level this skill. The debuff immunity will also become useful in future boss battles when there will be a multitude of debuffs.
Siren Song is Medb’s main CC skill. Siren Song has quite a few disadvantages, one of which being that it only works on Males. Additionally, even at level 10, it still has a small chance to miss. Nevertheless, having a semi-reliable Charm can be useful in pinches and against Male bosses.
