Stat Ratings

Attack / HP Growth

Xuanzang is an offensive single-target Caster with powerful team support on the side, complements her offensive prowess. With her powerful NP gauge charge skill and combined damage steroid from Rapid Sutra Chanting, on top of having the highest attack stat of any Caster class servant to date, she packs an immense punch that can’t be matched by anybody else in her class.

However, Xuanzang does suffer from the issue of being specialized in a role her class is weak at - Even compared to weaker single-target Berserkers she gets out-damaged on Assassin targets, and this hardly changes until she gets her NP Rank Up ways down the line in FGO’s lifespan. She does still pack powerful utility and Caster class NP gain to balance this weakness, but she cannot claim the immense single target damage output most of her counterparts in other classes manage.

Powerful, on-demand single-target NP damage

Compared to Medea's NP5 (post-NP interlude) damage output, Xuanzang hits for around 1.5 times her counterpart’s damage with just her base skillset, making her by far the best option for single target damage output from a Caster in the game. Factoring in the 80% NP gauge charge from Rapid Sutra Chanting, there is very little reason to use Medea  if Xuanzang is available, as she is capable of unleashing her NP with just Waver buffs or the Mage Association Uniform Mystic Code.

Strong team support and utility

While Xuanzang may only possess one supportive skill, it is an incredibly good one -  The Sanzang's Teaching skill grants the entire team a moderate star generation buff, an NP gain buff and an one turn debuff immunity, all of which can be appreciated by most teams. Furthermore, Sanzang's Teaching’s short 7 turn base cooldown makes it easy to pop constantly, with a short downtime of 2 turns if at level 10. Even in JP, Xuanzang is the only servant capable of providing an entire team debuff immunity, giving her an unmatchable niche if facing off against AOE Stuns, charms or NP seal in more difficult fights.

Taunt skill for pinch situations

By no means a dedicated tank, due to her low HP pool and otherwise lack of durability, Xuanzang is more than capable of taking a few hits for the team’s sake if needed due to Captivating Rosy Cheeks. It is unimpressive in both cooldown and duration, however it notably packs a 1500 damage cut buff at level 10, usually halving the damage taken from regular hits, or more or less nullifying resisted attacks. This in itself allows Xuanzang to draw attacks away from more vulnerable allies such as Berserkers and take relatively little damage in return, though still more than vulnerable to NP’s.

Redundant Niche

Xuanzang is, for lack of better phrasing, utterly outclassed at her own focus. While there is little competition for her damage output among other Casters, her damage when compared to Berserkers or even Jeanne Alter is incredibly lacking, needing approximately a 50% increase in damage to match them when targeting Assassins. While this is more a fault of Xuanzang’s class rather than her own kit, it’s a point showing that damage output is an unfitting niche for a Caster.

Dependent on supportive roles

Xuanzang may pack some supportive skills of her own, but on the whole her kit requires support from other servants to reach its real possible potential - she needs a 20% NP gauge prop from an external source to immediately NP with her first skill, her taunt can’t take the brunt of a single target NP without additional defensive support and her own team buff doesn’t particularly aid with offense or long term healing on its own. On the plus side most of those issues are fixed simply by pairing her with Waver or using the right Mystic Code, but that restricts her options for fitting into teams where other servants have no such issue with exerting their kit.

Craft Essence Recommendation

Maiden Leading Chaldea - Stars per turn to aid Xuanzang in her supportive role, and a sizeable Buster boost to further her NP damage. While this CE option doesn’t provide any help in getting Xuanzang’s NP off, she doesn’t need it anywhere near as much as other single target servants, allowing her to branch out on her CE options.

Limit / Zero Over - While Xuanzang may only pack 2 Buster cards including her NP, she still appreciates Buster up over NP power up due to the fact such buffs are already present in her kit, and wouldn’t stack multiplicatively with what’s already present. Naturally, raw Buster boost is a reasonably good choice for her.

Repeat Magic - The best NP gauge CE option that doesn’t feel like a waste when combined with Rapid Sutra Chanting. This CE’s low cost and excellent return for its value (especially when limit broken) makes it the best option for anyone seeking to pull off an unassisted turn 1 NP on a budget, while also aiding her NP gain with a notable NP gain buff, making NP spamming with a crit NPAA chain plausible.

The Classic Three Great Heroes - While not only thematic, this CE also has good synergy with Xuanzang’s kit. The NP power up buff, while not as ideal as Buster Up, still aids in her NP damage, while the increased stargen makes Xuanzang’s NP when combined with Sanzang's Teaching produce a surprisingly high sum of stars. While a good portion of the starting NP gauge is wasted, it still allows her to pull off an immediate NP with additional benefits should you hold back on popping her skills and let her gauge charge naturally.

Level Up Skill Recommendation

Both Xuanzang’s first and third skills are high priorities for her. While keeping Rapid Sutra Chanting at base level isn’t too detrimental to her, given the level scaling isn’t too big and she can still immediately NP using common 50% NP gauge CE’s at base level, having it at a higher level reduces its otherwise long cooldown and increases the overall amount of times Xuanzang can pull out her NP. Sanzang's Teaching’s supportive capabilities are potent and benefit massively from reduced cooldown, but don’t do much for Xuanzang’s own damage output. Captivating Rosy Cheeks A can largely be ignored until one has a surplus of materials and QP, not being very impressive in the first place and still being capable of its full functionality at base level.
