Intro

As the world’s self-proclaimed biggest fan of Indian Mythology that has not read a single piece of its original texts, this whole event is one hell of a love letter to me. Every single tangentially-related-to-Indra Servant all gathered in one place to have mixed input on how effective he was as a deadbeat dad, nemesis, or how his massive L resulted in your nemesis getting an absurd power buff.

But that aside, lotto events mean a whole host of grinding to get through, and frankly this will probably be your last chance to get emergency skill/ascension materials for Grand Servants en mass, so even in gameplay this is an important event.

Indra

So, why do I hate Indra so much? Well he used a cowardly trick to steal Karna’s birthright armor despite being the supposedly high-and-mighty Sky God, and constantly has other people bail him out after he fucks up and loses his own battles, both in the case of Vritra beating him in a 1v1 and swallowing him, and Indrajit defeating and capturing him, prompting Brahma of all people to negotiate Indra’s release, which in turn earned Indrajit his namesake for kicking this fraud’s ass.

Oh, and I can’t forget that time he secretly sponsored a terrorist organization behind the back of the outwardly-neutral Indian faction, causing all sorts of proble-

Wait, that was only in Highschool DxD? Well he’s just multidimensionally an asshole, in that case.

In the SSR Lancer lineup, one filled with Indian Lancers now, Indra manages to size up pretty nicely against the establishment, tying Bhima’s attack for 2nd highest of the class, while only suffering the 4th lowest HP stat for an SSR in return. To at least satisfy my hatred, Vritra surpasses him in offense and Bhima outclasses him in HP on top of typing Attack, so he’s still humbled by his contemporaries. Don’t ask me how I feel about Karna getting outclassed by him.

Like most Divine Spirits, Indra comes with an overwhelming number of passives. Magic Resistance, Riding, Divinity, and Independent Action are all ones you’re familiar with, providing solid Debuff Resistance, increased Quick and Critical Power, and the small damage boost and associated weaknesses of having Divinity.

In addition to those, Indra also has Thousand Eyes, providing even more passive Critical Damage and a minor boost to his star generation, as well as Heavy Drinker, boosting his incoming healing by 20% and providing himself a 10% gauge charge whenever he receives healing from sources that aren’t Regen, Command Codes, or Craft Essences. In other words, if you use a skill, NP, Mystic Code, or trigger some fight specific mechanic that heals him directly it provides the gauge charge.

The ability to convert healing into gauge charge opens up some interesting avenues, but naturally all these passives are spectacular and further improve Indra’s already-strong base performance.

So how does Indra shape up overall? Well on the one hand, between his divine lightning, godly weapon, and pristine mount, THE KING OF THE GODS’ CHARIOT CANNOT BE STOPPED:

  • +It may not be a quality I’ve focused on much, but Indra’s capability for damage output in drawn-out fights during difficult content is quite spectacular. With his passives and skills factored in, he has a +48% Critical Damage boost that increases further with each Quick card he uses, on top of a spectacular capacity for star generation that ensures he can put that damage output to use. Paired with his buff removal on-NP and NP refund that isn’t too dependent on hitting multiple targets, and Indra can punch hard in a multitude of circumstances.
  • +Naturally, Indra’s farming is pretty good, too. While his damage output may be incapable of universal farming without more elaborate setups, his most basic setup is very convenient and more than capable of tackling anything he has class advantage against, a quality rarer than you would think for Quick Servants. Paired with his variety of effective damage traits, it’s easy for Indra to find a farming node to perform well in.

However, I have an announcement - Indra is a…well I think you can get the rest based on my sentiment. Beat something notable in your Mythology in the first battle without help and you’ll no longer be fraudulent:

  • -While Indra is capable in many things, defense is not one of them. With absolutely zero defensive tools of note other than his frequent self-healing, Indra’s incapability to survive big hits is further exacerbated by the poor defensive support of Skadi and her variants, too. You essentially have to choose between defensive tools or maximum offensive capabilities with Indra’s support lineup, and others don’t have to make that choice.

For all my eager excitement to find a steaming pile of useless divinity, Indra is sadly pretty good. With solid damage output in both farming and difficult content contexts, as well as a decent range of Effective Damage buffs, Indra is rarely going to feel inappropriate for a lot of FGO’s content.

It especially helps that he packs one of the best traits in a NP, buff removal before damage, essentially resetting his targets to zero barring non-removable buffs, as common as they are in difficult fights nowadays. But even with that aside his reliable NP spamming and high Critical Damage are both great to have, even if it comes with his poor durability.

With the additional fun factor of being able to convert healing effects of Indra’s teammates or your Mystic Code choices into gauge charge, Indra is both effective and open to fun team building decisions. While not close to the pinnacle of offensive Servants available out there, he’s still a fine option to use and invest in if that’s your taste. He’s certainly not mine, at least. Rath™ Seal of Approval.

Outro

Boy this is the calm before the storm, despite the storm-like aesthetics of Indra. With the Anniversary event and all the content surrounding it a little under a month away, we’ll have much bigger things to look into, especially since it’s the big 10th Anniversary (for JP FGO, at any rate).

More immediately though, the Lancer Grand Duel is an immediate consequence of this event, apparently, and Indra’s presence makes me think…is he going to be the opponent? Because I’m just saying, for all the hating I’ve been doing in written word, if I can have my Grand Lancer Karna incinerate his face off repeatedly, I’ll swear off my grudge for life. That’ll be one hell of a catharsis.

We’ll just have to see, won’t we? Until next time!
