Intro

Folks, I have a confession to make. I know Typhon Ephemeros showed up in an earlier section of story, but I wasn’t paying much attention to story translations so I frankly have no clue what her deal is, but I’m happy for anyone who wanted them to be playable, that’s all.

Wait, now we have a whole event involving her? Well, shit. Now I’m utterly lost. Just give me the event rewards, I guess. In place of my lacking knowledge of the Fate story surrounding her, enjoy me shoehorning my random knowledge of Greek mythology into this MMM instead.

Typhon Ephemeros

I have to admit, this lady’s design is lovely, at least. There’s nothing that speaks to me more than slightly mentally unstable women with a hidden eye and black-red colour schemes. And yes, I do have Date A Live to blame for that.

Typhon’s stats start off incredibly strong for a Pretender. As the 4th SSR Pretender, she joins with a statline that completely blows her competition out of the water, with notably more attack than Phantasmoon, making her the strongest Pretender offensively, and somehow more HP than her magical girl Class-mate. I have to say, the power of Lasengle giving Extra class Servants EX-rank Mana and Caster-based base stats really is carrying her.

Putting Typhon’s incredible base attack aside, she continues the theme of excellence with her passive lineup - Dragon Reactor Ignition - Progenitor Dragon provides one of the best passive benefits in continual 5% gauge charge per turn, while Dragon Path Expansion - Typhon provides a solid boost to her NP and Critical damage, and lastly Fruit of Impermanence provides a passive +30% Buff Removal resistance at the cost of 30% Debuff Resistance down.

All of those passives are pretty great, though Fruit of Impermanence provides a potentially powerful boost in exchange for a rather crippling vulnerability. Regardless the outcome is Typhon has an incredibly potent foundation to work on, albeit with a hefty weakness to debuffs.

So how is Typhon on the whole? Well on the one hand, she’s the embodiment of the will to defy the Gods, equal to the mighty Melusine in lore, and honestly, would you say no to taking a suspicious fruit from her?

  • +Typhon is quite the offensive powerhouse, at least in a difficult content context. The Pretender class advantage gives her a wide strike zone, and between her easily accessible effective damage multiplier (with her Bond CE on), high critical damage output (with her Bond CE on) and just good offensive steroids in general, Typhon can really bring the pain even if she’s not full capitalizing on the AOE nature of her NP. In addition her inherent Invincible Pierce on her NP and passive Buff Removal resist is well tailored to the roughest fights in the game, though you have to be careful on who to field her against. I have the feeling Typhon wouldn’t have a fun time versus LB5.2’s Aphrodite, for instance. Ironic, if you ask me.
  • +This lady dragon isn’t all offense, either. With a good defensive tool in her Invincible buff, and a package of solid supportive tools, she gives back to the team as much as she demands. Skill cooldown reduction on some supports can be key to keeping a team alive, and her 20% gauge charge for the team is a rare perk that really accelerates the NP gauge charging of the whole lineup, especially with a Koyanskaya reducing Typhon’s own cooldowns. She can be used pretty flexibly in this regard, though it’s worth noting Typhon has some counter-synergy with Castoria wherein the support’s NP will debuff cleanse Typhon, eliminating the damage boost she’s built up. Merlin is a more suiting defense/sustain support option as a result, especially considering their card type alignment.

However, Typhon is also a failed usurper, got smacked down by the horny lightning dude, and now has to mald in Mount Etna for all presumed eternity. Them’s the breaks, buddy.

  • -While Typhon does have a potentially powerful performance both in difficult content and farming, she does so with a higher investment demand than most Servants. The gap between a Typhon with Bond CE access and one without is very large, something on par with Heracles in Bond CE dependence, and that’s hard to work around - there are some Command Codes which hit Typhon with debuffs, such as Sunflower Paintbrush, but all the same you could use Typhon with both those Command Codes and her Bond CE for even more damage. Add in the fact her inherent debuff weakness can be crippling in certain fights and she’s not as ubiquitous as you would hope.

I have to say, the thing that’s shocking to me is just how stacked the SSR Pretender lineup is before Typhon’s addition. Dante, ProtoMerlin and Oberon are all spectacular Servants, the best of their roles, while Phantasmoon is just a solid difficult content damage dealer. With Typhon’s addition, that trend is utterly...maintained.

Don’t get me wrong, Typhon has her own issues - I generally don’t like it when Servants desire specific kinds of Command Codes to even function in their specialty, and that goes even more so for ones that essentially beg you to farm out their Bond CE like Typhon does. But even with that aside, Typhon is just great. She packs potent offense in both farming and difficult content contexts, has a broad selection of utility tools and team support options, and synergizes effectively with the Buster card type’s premier supports. Unlike some Pretenders and Alter Egos, Typhon has good enough offensive output to farm the Knight classes in spite of her lesser 1.5x class advantage, and likewise her damage output in difficult content, able to put her strong critical damage output and NP effective multiplier to use, compensates for the lesser damage output of an AOE NP.

She gets the best of both worlds, and ultimately that makes the heavy investment she demands compared to others well worth it. While I expect the competition for the Extra class Grand slots to be rather stacked (it seems like we’ll have 2 slots for 8 different classes, which is hell if you ask me), Typhon does get an exceptional benefit from being a Grand compared to most Servants, so she’s worth bearing in mind for that, too.

Typhon might not bring anything exceptionally new to the table, but as a Pretender she manages to utilize her broad Class advantage effectively, and can tackle a wide range of content with a very well-rounded kit. For those lacking an offensive Pretender, whether for farming or difficult content, Typhon makes for an excellent jack-of-all-trades in that regard. Rath™ Seal of Approval, with a recommendation.

Outro

While I can’t say I was particularly excited for Typhon as a new Servant, I have to admit her kit and utility as a Servant was fun to explore in writing. Not many Servants make me dig through databases of almost every aspect of the game like she did to explore exactly how effective she is in practice.

But putting all the Pithos Pathos aside, we’re nearing the Anniversary, and the big 10th one at that. Who knows what we’ll have in store for what is likely the biggest celebration yet? Perhaps it’ll be an Apotheosis of the game, or an Odyssey unto new content yet unexplored.

Or, uh...shit, where’s my big list of fancy Greek words when I need it? I promised Greek mythology references but frankly I forgot to deliver. Call me Icarus, I guess. Actually, weren’t people speculating Icarus / Daedalus would be related to this event? Guess we’ll see if that pans out.

Regardless, we have a lot in store for the future, so until that big Anniversary gacha or whatever comes before it drops, see you later!
