The Modern Magus Magazine

As the MMM’s go on, so does the event story…and all I can really say is, sheesh, Jason is really only capable of worming his way into the graces of women who could crush him with a glance, huh?

To be fair, I’d gladly risk being crushed by Passionlip for my transgressions. Just ignore the rapidly building extreme cult of Ilya-ism developing on the island, I’m sure it’s nothing…

Ryougi Shiki (Moon Cancer)

There are some events in history that are simply foundational to the timeline, which form the basis for future events, and diverting them from their course would result in drastic calamities in the far future. The very foundation of why the Singularities in Part 1 existed.

I believe one of these foundational events is the existence of the Decapitating Bunny 2018 CE. The mere concept of Ryougi Shiki wearing bunny ears created such a powerful “gap moe” energy that it manifested a Mooncancer Servant several years later.

Remember to give thanks to the unbelievably jank original Kara no Kyoukai event and its mission / CE system for this blessing.

As an SSR Mooncancer, Shiki stands among giants, and unfortunately a Servant based on a human with some extraordinary abilities in the modern era doesn’t result in the greatest base stats. With the second-worst Attack stat and third-highest HP stat, Ryougi Shiki is not offensively-leaned, and also suffers from pretty weak stats in general, being outclassed on both fronts by BB Dubai, for example.

Thankfully, our resident bunny does have compensation in her passives. Magic Resistance, Independent Action, and Presence Concealment all come together to boost her passive Debuff Resistance, and improve her capability to produce critical stars and dish out damage when using them.

In addition, she packs Entity of the Outer Realm (Fake), providing a notable 5 Critical Stars per turn, and establishing the primary gimmick of her kit - a boolean Sunlight and Moonlight state that she can swap between. She starts in Sunlight by default, but gains a notable passive boost to all her card types while in Moonlight, so it’s inherently stronger.

So how does Shiki perform on the whole? Well, on one hand, she’s a cut above the rest, and the performance she has to offer to you is positively killer:

  • +Shiki brings great offense to the table, and she does so with incredible versatility. Not just in her capability to flex between single-target and AOE damage, but also the range of effects on her skills based on her current state. In terms of a single Servant that can cover as much ground as possible, it’s hard to find a scenario where Shiki can’t perform well as the offensive option in a team.
  • +The utility effects Shiki has at her disposal are nothing to scoff at. 3-turn Debuff Immunity or 3-turn Buff Removal Resistance on a short cooldown can trivialize some fights, and Anti-Enforcement Defense is a ticking time bomb that could wall a difficult fight in the future, should the enemy get an un-removable version of it in a hard fight. In such cases, Shiki will really be able to stand out from the crowd. And that’s not even the only thing she specializes in, that Heaven attribute effectiveness will come in handy somewhat frequently.

However, in revelling under the moonlight she’s also teetering ever so closer to the boundary of life and death, threatening to fall off:

  • -Mooncancer class ain’t that great, innit. It sucks to bring this up every time we have an offensive Mooncancer, especially those with a poor Attack stat, but Shiki is certainly a victim of it. Mooncancers have some of the lowest Attacks among SSRs, and their class advantage is also one of the most limited in the game, without the trade-offs that Rulers or Avengers get in potent defense or offense. She performs well in spite of it, but it’s still a burden holding her back.

Shiki’s Mooncancer form really feels like the strongest rendition yet of a modular NP mechanic. While I love Melusine to death, her original form’s mechanics for swapping from ST to AOE essentially strips her of a skill if you want to use her for single-target, and it’s a one-way switch. Other Servants like Barghest’s Summer form have attempted better, but fundamentally lacked power to show the potential of the mechanic.

Thankfully, Shiki ends that trend and can well and truly excel regardless of form, instead of feeling pigeon-holed into a single form. In single-target she can shrug off the annoying buff removal mechanics of difficult boss fights and dish out powerful single-target NP and Critical Damage, while in AOE form she is a farming virtuoso, and one that doesn’t struggle to perform similarly well in difficult fights that call for an AOE NP, either.

On top of all that are enough minor niche capabilities that will permit her to shine in rarer, but common enough, circumstances that demand things like Anti-Enforcement Defense Pierce or Heaven attribute effectiveness. While she’s a superb offensive Mooncancer, there is a ceiling to that from the simple fact of being a Mooncancer, with the limited offensive potential that comes with. Despite it, she remains a solid Arts offense option, and the fact she can fill the roles of two Servants at once, and not suffer an ounce in effectiveness for that sheer versatility only elevates her value. Rath™ Seal of Approval.

Miyu Edelfelt (Lancer)

You know, the more I think about the insane, traumatic shit that Miyu has gone through, it’s probably inevitable that she had a psychotic break of some kind.

And so we have this, Miyu living out her dreams of being…the Shrine Maiden to worship her best friend (and maybe more, based on her level of obsession?) I mean, always be grateful for what your friends do for you, but maybe just put a limit on how far that goes?

As a 4* Lancer, Miyu takes on the impossible and attempts to challenge Arturia Lancer Alter’s absurdly high base stat total that has left every other Lancer of her rarity in the dust for a decade, almost. With the 2nd-highest Attack of the class and rarity band, she certainly gets close, but no cigar, trading off her impressive offensive might for the tied-worst HP in exchange.

Miyu does, however, have some useful passives to help soothe the pain of losing to Arturia Lancer Alter. Her Magic Resistance is a solid bulwark against debuffs, as it usually is, and she also has Encampment Creation (Traditional), providing the Arts boost of Territory Creation as well a moderate Critical Damage boost if an Ilya Servant is on the field. Meanwhile, her unique passive from her original form, Infinite Mana Supply, carries over, with even greater potency - providing an impressive 5% gauge per turn to herself.

So, how does this…absolutely not cult-ish Miko perform in practice? Well, on one hand, she’s registered Ilya-ism as an official religious institution, so certain forms of speech toward them could be considered discrimination:

  • +Miyu has…some useful supportive tools. Giving the whole team Buff Removal Resist on a long duration is handy in difficult fights, and the spammable nature of her NP combined with its team gauge charging means she has a way of providing team gauge charge by proxy, while also dishing out…an amount of damage.

However, I do not care about getting sued by a child, so I’ll be frank right here, she sucks…again:

  • -Even when she’s hitting Evil alignment foes, Miyu’s damage output is pretty awful. She doesn’t have many sources of damage, and the ones she does don’t complete the damage buff trinity of Attack, Card Booster, and NP Damage Up, so she hits for very mediocre damage without an Attack buff active, but even then she’s working with an SR Attack stat.
  • -While I can usually give leeway for poor damage output if there’s unique utility to be found, Miyu’s only notable perk is providing the team with gauge charge on each NP, and the limited scope of Buff Removal Resist. Every other part of Miyu’s kit only improves or protects herself, short of a minor boost to team NP Strength. If I want a Servant that does nothing but charge the gauges of the team every NP and some niche team support, I’d use Tamamo. And I don’t use Tamamo very often, you get what I’m saying?

At this stage I’m wondering if Lasengle has a directive to ensure every incarnation of Miyu is very bad. At least with her original form the gimmick around her being a largely static team support device that lost all value if she died matches her lore in the series, but with a Summer form you can really go nuts. And they did…for her personality in this form, I suppose.

Even with every factor stacked in her favor, Miyu’s damage output is not very good, only capable of class-advantage farming when using a Black Grail, and the unique benefits she provides compared to any other Arts AOE farmer are…incredibly slim, even for an SR. The team gauge charging is cool, but most of the time you’d prefer an offensive Servant to do good damage, with anything else as a bonus.

And let me tell you, Miyu here does not cut it as a dedicated support. So she fails on pretty much all fronts. At least this Miyu has the dignity to leave her buffs on her allies when she dies.

Outro

If I could turn back time, I would try to get these MMM’s done faster, but alas, the release schedule this Summer is utterly merciless.

Though saying that, I am remembering something from the past…a lost Summer, spent frolicking with a childhood friend on a beautiful island…one voiced by Aoi Yuuki…I’m sure it’s nothing.
