Intro

Fellow Masters - Your Journey up until this point…has it been fun? Are you satisfied? Did you push beyond the veil of self-annihilation, or did you sit waiting for the clock to turn to 2026, to enjoy the fantasy within fantasy from that date onwards?

Regardless, the meaning of your struggles remain the same - there is no value in an eternal fiction, “happy ends” only matter if they can be earnt by the blood and sweat of real effort. No matter who you lose, whoever cannot be saved, whatever ends up in your hands should be something that was within grasp to begin with.

Even this humble publication for self-satisfaction obeys that rule. If the road ahead is merely a victory parade at the end of a blinding flower trail, then let us enjoy that journey until the sweet scent and iridescent colours fade to monochrome.

Speaking of Roads, I suppose that humble mistranslation we’ve fallen prey to since Mashu’s NP upgrade in Camelot rears its head once more:

Lord Logres

Solomon, the ever-antagonistic bastard, might’ve earnt the right to bear the name when all was said and done, but his blatant brushing-off of Fujimaru about the Artoria retrain right in front of us, I shan’t forgive.

But regardless, Lord Logres is the fabled and long-hypothesized “King in the Mountain” form of King Arthur. Not the real individual who made the contract with Alaya to save their Kingdom, but the Knightly ideal cultured by Merlin, Uther Pendragon, and Sir Ector to present as the perfect King to Britain. The actual Heroic Spirit of King Arthur cultivated on the throne by human belief. As a result, she has Avalon, and can even harness the “Sword of the Planet” aspect of Excalibur without meeting the requirement of the Seals of the Round Table.

Yeah, no doubt Solomon was right to call her the ultimate Heroic Spirit.

Given all the glazing I’ve just done for Logres’s lore, it’s unsurprising that she also stands at the peak of the Saber class. With the tied highest Attack for any Saber, shared with Ibuki, and the tied 4th-lowest HP of any SSR Saber, she’s got impressive offense without much lost in return - Sabers are already strong in base stats compared to other classes, so being low on HP and high on Attack just means she’s somewhat bulky and very good offensively. All upside, in other words.

As for passives, Logres is surprisingly modest. Her A-rank Magic Resistance and Riding is similar, but slightly upgraded from her original Saber form, providing reliable Debuff Resistance and a modest boost to her sole Quick card, while Knighting applies a peculiar buff to Logres herself.

For one time, Logres gets a boost to the HP recovered when her Guts triggers, and provides a 3-turn Attack buff to her allies (but not herself) when it happens. The funny peculiarity is that she can’t get Guts from her own kit, so this is really just a bonus if you happen to slap a Guts on her from an external source. I don’t even know the exact numbers on this passive since it’s so niche, but I suppose it can come up if you duo her with Aesc or something, or use the thematically appropriate F/SN Saber dress Mystic Code to net the benefits.

So is Lord Logres all Solomon hyped her up to be? On one hand, she’s fulfilling all the fantasies of fans of Fate/Stay Night from the outset, a true perfected Saber:

  • +I think it’s pretty clear from the outset that Lord Logres has a great offensive profile. Between her immaculate capability for NP spam, strong damage steroids, and perpetual boosts to Attack, she’s punching hard whether it’s from her NP or her near-assured crit Buster attacks. The perks of her kit means this also transfers to farming, with some pretty disgusting synergy with both Koyanskaya and Oberon meaning she can best utilize the strengths of that duo and ignore their drawbacks.
  • +Logres is just another addition to the roster of offensive Servants who essentially provide support to their team, too. With continual NP Overcharge boosts, gauge charge, Attack buffs, and healing getting dished out to her team, you can really see the line of tutelage between her and both Merlins, as well as the blood ties to Morgan and Aesc.
  • +Lord Logres is uniquely positioned to tackle some of the most difficult content FGO can throw at you. Invincible Pierce is a perpetual target to meet for offensive Servants, as often story bosses pack unremovable Evasion/Invincible buffs, or simply slap said buffs on themselves often to slow down the player’s offensive pace. Beyond that, her reliable Debuff and Buff Removal immunity keep her from being plastered with the most debilitating effects in the game, and her Threat Against Humanity effectiveness will keep her sword sharp against the greatest dangers in the plot, if not actual gameplay (given how relatively easy the Part 2 Final boss was).

However, as perfect as Logres might purport herself to be, that is just a mirror image, a projection of an ideal made to usurp and override the real deal. The fantasy within a fantasy, indeed:

  • -Lord Logres might be perfectly serviceable as a universal farmer, but when you take her out of the farming theorycrafting and onto the field, she does have a clear flaw - her 2-turn downtime from using her 3rd skill. While I did say earlier that the 2 turns after a 3 turn cycle aren’t as relevant since most buffs and NP loops drop off by that point, the fact remains that many Servants can contribute useful Critical Damage or have sufficient NP refund to keep up the offense even past that point. Logres, too, would be capable of that if not for the Sleep drawback, and given the amount of power the skill provides to her and the team, not using it at all simply isn’t an option. The king will one day return, but boy will those two turns feel agonizing to endure, especially since swapping her out or even sacrificing her with Cheng Gong aren’t options.

I have to say, if I was a hardcore Artoria fan I’d feel pretty put out by how this gleaming, illusory form of the original Saber completely blows her out the water. From the potency of her skills to her damage output and team support, Logres really does try to make herself the premier Saber. It’d almost be a betrayal to use her over Artoria…

Good thing I’ve never been a huge fan of Saber in F/SN. Medea gang for life, betrayal’s in my blood, woo!

Half-joking aside, Logres is a really fantastic Saber, with the NP looping and damage output necessary to be a mainstay farmer and overall offensive option for difficult content. The way she supports her teammates while dishing out damage really keeps the supportive engine of her allies alive, and can even provide boosts to secondary damage dealers in more complex farming setups should the need arise.

Her 3-turns on, 2-turns off schedule will be quite annoying to play around, but I think she provides enough benefits to be worth the cost, and should that really be too much of an issue, in drawn-out fights I think you can hold off on using her third skill and still reap much of the benefits of her kit, even if you miss out on plenty of benefits.

The fact of the matter is straightforward, though - Lord Logres is an excellent Saber, and a candidate for the best in the game. If you’re lacking a suitable Buster Saber option, she’s spectacular, and even then she surpasses options like her vanilla counterpart, Mordred, or Altera in enough aspects to be in consideration over them. Rath™ Seal of Approval, with a recommendation.

Outro

I have a little something to confess - around the time Ordeal Call started, I decided to promise to myself I would quit FGO when Nasu’s scenario writing also left the game - at the end of Part 2, if the fickle mushroom kept to their word.

Well that deadline has technically passed, and behold - MMM THE END. Except I’m probably not going to stop writing the MMM. For one, I enjoy the foray of writing these even if I theoretically stopped playing FGO. You don’t have to experience the game personally to apply the theorycrafting knowledge I’ve accumulated over the years.

And secondly, I’m not really sure I’m quitting the game yet. Part 2 was a fantastic conclusion to the game, but the communication from the development team in the New Year broadcast and Nasu themselves isn’t clear whether FGO will be kept alive on the Golden Gacha Throne until the year well surpasses 40,000 AD and it meets EoS by lack of profits instead of the conclusion of its storyline.

So I’m stuck in Limbo, essentially. Hopefully the next broadcast will set some kind of timeline for the game, and if said timeline doesn’t set a clear EoS, I’ll probably decide my own departure point as a player. But as I said, I’ll continue writing the MMM for as long as writing itself draws my interest.

With that in mind…you’ll see my departure in Modern Magus Magazine THE END 4.0 Final Season Cour 2 Part 6…maybe?
