“Wanna join me for a little drink? What? You’re a minor? Why does that matter? Everything that lives will die one day. Live while you’re alive. Laugh, cry, eat, drink! Hahah, ahahahahaha!”

The unwilling mentor of Ushiwakamaru, and founder of the oldest school of swordsmanship in West Japan, Kiichi Hogen joins the roster as the Welfare Servant of the Little Big Tengu event. They are the second Quick AoE Assassin welfare to grace the cast, complete with a balanced offensive and supportive kit, and the ability to loop their NP.

Kiichi Hogen’s kit also has a multitude of offensive and supportive effects. Famed Blade is their primary Card steroid and defensive option, giving them a 3-turn Quick buff and a 2-time, 3-turn Evade. The rest of their skills have the ability to support allies, with Onmyoudou (Buddhism) providing an ally of choice with up to 20% NP Gauge and a boost to their Star Gather Rate (which can come in handy with their ability to generate an ample number of stars via their Quick Cards and NP). Their third skill, Strategies of the Six Secret Teachings, provides the entire party with 3 turns of modest ATK and NP Gain buffs, making them a welcome addition to most any party.

Their NP, Secrets and Strategies, Great Demon's War Fan, buffs their own Quick performance before dealing damage to all enemies, and then removes defensive buffs after damage, which can come in handy for certain encounters. Due to the NP’s high hit counts, it also generates a plethora of stars that can be used on the subsequent turn to deal devastating Critical Hits. Their NP’s performance only further increases in the presence of Quick Support, although even without support, their NP damage among AoE Quick Assassins is on the higher end thanks to their Welfare status and ease of reaching NP5. They are capable of looping their NP with Skadi, albeit with slight difficulty (although more easily than the prior AoE Quick Assassin Welfare, Scathach (Assassin)), partially thanks to their kit’s NP Gain buff along with having an NP charge skill.

Overall, Kiichi Hogen is an excellent Quick AoE Assassin option for dispatching Rider waves, and true to their nature of taking on disciples to teach the way of the sword, they provide a helpful boost to any party member’s offensive performance. Masters in need of filling the relatively rare AoE Assassin niche won’t want to miss out on recruiting Kiichi Hogen to Chaldea for both for her wave clearing capacity and her excellent supportive abilities.

🟢 Strengths

Welfare Status

Kiichi Hogen can be obtained for free and can easily reach NP5 by completing their event. This allows them to reach higher damage thresholds more easily, and makes them among an excellent AoE Assassin option.

NP Looping Capability

Due to their kit’s 20% NP charge and NP gain buffs, Kiichi Hogen is capable of looping with a double Skadi setup, although they do so with slight difficulty and are only consistent with a plugsuit setup and a third NP charge support such as Altria Caster, Waver, etc. However, they NP loop with more ease than other existing AoE Quick Assassins.

Offensive Support

Kiichi Hogen can charge an ally’s gauge by up to 20%, to help either top off the NP gauge of an ally, or their own. This enables immediate access to an NP in combination with a non-MLB Kaleidoscope. The charge also comes with a small Star Gather buff for the ally, which can support critical damage output. Their third skill also provides up to 20% ATK and NP Gain buffs, which help both their own damage output as well as allies’.

Defensive Buff Removal on NP

Their NP removes defensive buffs after damage, which includes normal Defense Up buffs, Evade, Invincibility, Damage Cut, or any death resist buffs. Although it would be nicer if this effect happened before damage, having the ability to remove these effects on a freely available Welfare Servant is still invaluable for encounters where these buffs come into play.

🔴 Weaknesses

Low Class Damage Multiplier

The Assassin damage multiplier of x0.8 doesn’t do Kiichi Hogen any favors, and although this affects all Assassins across the board, the demerit is notable enough to likely pigeonhole Kiichi Hogen into the role of a Rider (or Berserker) wave farmer, where they can benefit fully from Class advantage. This damage multiplier makes Kiichi Hogen’s damage sometimes not quite reach the threshold required for farming waves without support, despite their NP5 welfare status.

Mediocre Card NP Gain

Kiichi Hogen’s NP Gain outside of looping setups is somewhat mediocre, being a little below average for her class. In most cases, it can be tough to charge her NP gauge quickly if her own charge skill is on cooldown, at least without support or crits in play. She is somewhat reliant on the presence of her single Arts Card for high Card NP gain turns.

Level Up Skill Recommendations

LowSkillIcon
Famed Blade A+
Increase own Quick Card effectiveness (3 turns). Apply Evade to self (2 times, 3 turns).
HighSkillIcon
Onmyoudou (Buddhism) A
Increase NP Gauge for an ally. Increase Critical Star Gather Rate for an ally (1 turn).
MedSkillIcon
Strategies of the Six Secret Teachings EX
Increase ATK for all allies (3 turns). Increase NP Gain for all allies (3 turns).

Every one of Kiichi Hogen’s skills gain relevant benefits when leveled. If wishing to utilize Kiichi Hogen NP right off the bat (such as if only non-MLB copies of Kaleidoscope are available), it is worth leveling Skill 2 first for the 20% NP charge. Otherwise, their offensive capacity is boosted by the remaining two skills and are worth leveling, with the third skill also having party support effects.

  • Famed Blade A+ – This skill functions as both Kiichi Hogen’s primary Quick steroid, as well as their defensive skill (Evade). Only the Quick performance buff scales with level, and the effective change per level is relatively low, so this can probably be left for last. However, if wishing to maximize their performance (which includes maximizing the ease with which they can NP loop), this is worth eventually leveling to max.
  • Onmyoudou (Buddhism) A – This is Kiichi Hogen’s NP charge skill, and the values for the charge scale from 10% at minimum to 20% at max level. Since 20% is a common NP charge threshold required (such as in combination with Kaleidoscope), this is worth prioritizing and maxing as soon as possible if planning to use them.
  • Strategies of the Six Secret Teachings EX – This skill provides party offensive and NP Gain support, both of which scale with level. The ATK buff stacks multiplicatively with their NP’s built-in Quick Buff, so levels in this skill are generally more effective for Kiichi Hogen’s offense performance (compared to leveling the first skill). This skill can be leveled second, and can be leveled to max for those who wish to get the most out of their performance.

🖼️ Craft Essence Recommendations

With farming as their primary usage case, Kiichi Hogen’s CE selection benefits most fromStarting NP Gauge effects. They also benefit from NP Damage buffs, which stack multiplicatively with the Card + ATK buffs from their skills, although ATK and Quick Performance also works well.

  • Kaleidoscope / The Imaginary Element: With a non-MLB Kaleidoscope, and their second skill maxed, Kiichi Hogen can NP immediately from battle start. This also enables her to NP loop comfortably in farming scenarios.
  • The Black Grail / Heaven’s Feel: As is usual, The Black Grail provides the largest boost to Kiichi Hogen’s NP damage output, while Heaven’s Feel is a decent alternative if The Black Grail is unavailable.
  • Holy Night Supper / Knights of Marines / Crimson Teacher’s Pointer / Traces of Christmases Past / Golden Sumo: Boulder Tournament: These Craft Essences provide a mixture of starting NP Gauge and Attack, Quick, or NP Damage buffs. Note that Holy Night Supper gives an NP damage boost, which has the highest effective damage buff for Kiichi Hogen. However, Quick performance also helps slightly boost both NP Gain and Star drop rate for her cards, which make them a decent option as well.

Character Info

An onmyouji priest and strategist, she is described in legend as the founder of the Kyouhachiryu, the oldest school of swordsmanship in western Japan. She taught young Ushiwakamaru the art of war and even passed on the most closely guarded secrets of warfare, the "Six Secret Teachings" and the "Three Strategies of Huang Shigong"...though not on purpose. Kiichi Hogen became murderously angry after learning that Ushiwakamaru tried to seduce her daughter to sneak a look at the manuscripts, making her a truly terrifying mentor to Ushiwakamaru. Her name: Kiichi Hogen. But her true identity is...?

Profile 1

Height/Weight: 171cm, 57kg Origin: "Gikeiki," Otogizoushi, Legend of the Kurama Tengu, etc. Region: Japan Alignment: Chaotic-Neutral Gender: - (Current physical body is female) She can change her appearance and gender at will. Her current form is her most frequently used one, but apparently her most impressive appearance is different.

Profile 2

Famed Blade: A+ Kiichi Hogen is said to be the founder of the legendary school of swordsmanship "Kyouhachiryu." Kyouhachiryu is considered to be the origin of Western Japanese swordsmanship, consisting of the eight styles Kiichi taught her eight leading disciples. One of the disciples is said to have been Minamoto-no-Yoshitsune (Ushiwakamaru). Onmyoudou (Buddhism): A Kiichi Hogen was an influential Buddhist onmyouji in the capital during the late days of the Heian Era. Strategies of the Six Secret Teachings: EX The ultimate collection of strategies, regarded as one of the world's greatest. It is a legendary strategic book on par with the "Three Strategies," and is considered to be one of the Seven Military Classics in China. Kiichi Hogen is the guardian of this manuscript.

Profile 3

She is happy-go-lucky. She does not worry about the little things, laughing them off without a care in the world. At first glance, her words and actions speak of an inclusive, humane, and reliable nature... But in reality, her sensibilities are far removed from anything human, and even a brief conversation with her makes clear that she's a little...off in relation to humans. She's basically just not human.

Profile 4

The supernatural entity named Kiichi Hogen is often identified with the Kurama Tengu, or the great tengu Soujoubou (the high priest and god of the tengu) of Mt. Kurama. The Edo period joururi (a Japanese dramatic narrative) titled “Kiichi Hogen Sanryaku-no-maki” lists Kiichi Hogen as the alias of Soujoubou, a tengu from Mt. Kurama. In this game, too, Kiichi Hogen is not considered human. She is the great tengu. She is an Elemental who aligns with the mountains, sky, wind, fire, and other natural aspects, and while she is not a Divine Spirit, she has more in common with them than with humans. Although she does not normally interact with humans, there have been some examples of her bestowing something upon humans, as in the case of Ushiwakamaru and the Kyouhachiryu. Her gifts tend to be knowledge, skills, and secret techniques...though not exclusively. The moment you put her in a bad mood, you are liable to be sent (quite literally) to hell. After all, a great tengu as renowned as the Kurama Soujoubou should have no difficulty opening the gates of hell.

Profile 5

[Secrets and Strategies, Great Demon's War Fan] Rank: A NP Type: Anti-Fortress Range: 1 - 50 Maximum Targets: 500 Rikutou Sanryaku, Maou Sondaiusen. The “usen” refers to a fan made from the feathers of a hawk or eagle. It is a tool used to command troops, but in other instances, they also appear in legends and paintings as mystic Noble Phantasms possessing enormous divine power used by sages and tengu. It is a tengu's fan, and Assassin Kiichi Hogen uses one of these fans (feathered uchiwa) for her Noble Phantasm. Its destructive power is, in a word, tremendous. This Noble Phantasm better embodies the properties of Kurama Tengu, the great tengu known as Soujoubou of Mt. Kurama, as opposed to Kiichi Hogen, the onmyouji and strategist. Upon its True Name revelation, the power of its winds is on the level of a storm or a cataclysm that splits the mountains and shakes the earth.

Profile 6

She is not as knowledgeable about the workings of the human mind. However, sometimes, when she is in the mood, she has been known to grant the prayers of the weak, or raise and instruct individuals who have hidden talent like Ushiwakamaru. She does not understand humans that well, but she doesn’t hate them, in the same way that she does not hate animals or insects. She loves parties. Her signature laugh is “kanra kara kara!”

Hahahahaha.

Okay, I made up my mind!
Want to be my kid? Actually, I order you. I'm adopting you.
What? No?
Oh I get it. I totally get it. You precocious kid, you.
Then you should be my bride.
...Why the shocked look?
Human, tengu, oni, the occult, male or female...all of those are trivial.
I just got interested in this living being: you, and I simply desire to form a bond, a union.
Conversation 1
Want to go somewhere? Hm.
Conversation 2
You're the student. I'm the mentor.
Do you agree on that relationship?
Conversation 3
Being ordered around is truly amusing.
Oh, there's no need to hold back. If you ever falter in your leadership, I'll scold you not as a Servant, but as your mentor.
Conversation 4 (Ushiwakamaru, Ushiwakamaru (Assassin))
Hi hi. How've you been, Shana-oh? It's me. Don't you recognize me, Shana-oh? Don't you remember how even though I taught you everything from how to handle a sword to a naginata, you went behind my back and seduced my daughter to steal a look at the "Six Secret Teachings."
Come on, I never said that. I absolutely did not say you could read it. Give it up, Shana-oh. I'm not mad personally, but you still have to step up and pay for what you did to Tankaibou and my daughter, Kouju-no-Mae!
Conversation 5 (Taira-no-Kagekiyo)
Kagekiyo!?
I guess you lived a clumsy life and died just as clumsily, Shana-oh.
Conversation 6 (Ashiya Douman)
Pfft!
Y-y-y-y-you! YOU! What the hell are you doing, Douman!?
Conversation 7 (Murasaki Shikibu, Murasaki Shikibu (Rider))
Oh you're cute. Your name's Kaoruko?
Good, good, let me teach you everything I know.
Conversation 8 (Any Swimsuit Servant)
Ah, what a feast for my eyes. These swimsuits are truly good...
Conversation 9 (Arthur Pendragon (Prototype))
You there, knight. Yeah you...the sacred sword wielder.
You're not from around here, are you?
Hmmm. I suppose there are those who walk a strange path...yeah...
Conversation 10 (Merlin)
The Mage of Flowers...it's been quite a while.
The last time we met was when we―mgrhmrhgjgm...!
What's the big idea? Why are you trying to shut me...(muffle, muffle).
Conversation 11 (Helena Blavatsky, Helena Blavatsky (Archer), Clear Little Big Tengu)
Hm? Why yes, I am Maouson...the Demon Lord. But I'm more a Divided Spirit of them, to be exact. I'm probably more like the avatar of it in the shape of a tengu.
What? You thought I was Sanat Kumara itself? Wahahahaha!
Conversation 12 (Scathach, Scathach (Assassin), Clear Little Big Tengu)
Ah, Scáthach. You are the mentor of the West. And I'm the mentor of the East.
Now that that's settled, how about we have a round of drinks together?
...Monk Sanzang? The mentor of Buddhism is a different category!

That thing's been known by numerous names all over the world. But Holy Grail, huh? That has a nice ring to it.
During an Event
There's a lot of hustle and bustle right now, and it seems exciting. An event?
Okay, let's go. Festivals are a good thing!
Birthday
Hehehehe. Of course I know today's the day of your birth.
Joyous days like this obviously call for a feast, so I'll personally prepare a special giant tengu meal for you!
Nah, don't you worry about a thing. Hahahaha. There's nothing to fear!
Summon
Kiichi Hogen, manifested as an Assassin!
I wanted to be a Lancer, but this is fine too!
...Did you like my impersonation of a Servant being summoned?
Heh. Take good care of me, okay?

Now that things have settled down a bit, allow me to formally introduce myself. Ahem.
I am the one and only Kiichi Hogen!
I'm the world-famous mentor and great Ten...
Well, let's leave that part for another time.
Anyway, it's nice to meet you!
