Intro

My bout of talking like a WH40k Ork for alliteration purposes aside, the season of love and realization of crushing loneliness is upon us once more, but worry not - FGO is here to save you with parasocial romantic interactions with your favourite gambled .jpg’s.

And of course, the Chaldean Mama’s alliance has a new challenger approach - how will this shake up the internal mama politics?

Demeter

All right, I can provide a complete low-down on Demeter, having just 100%’d Hades 2, world renowned for its incredibly accurate depictions of Mythology with absolutely 0 creative diversions of any kind.

So with Demeter you want to either pick up a Special or Cast boon to inflict Freeze on enemies in a way that compliments the Curse of your main Attack boon, such as applying Burn via a Hestia boon, as many of Demeter’s duo boons improve your main damage output immensely. If you’re running a Cast-focused aspect like the Aspect of Circe, Demeter’s Cast-focused boons are very potent, especially when paired with Ares ones for their Duo Skill.

And, of course, Weed Killer and Steady Growth are incredibly good as standalone boons, with Weed Killer capable of turning many weapons into mindless Omega Attack-spamming builds…

Oh right, I’m here to talk about FGO. Hurray. Exciting.

The Lancer class really does draw in the full-blown deities, doesn’t it? Thankfully for Demeter, she more than surpasses her divine competitors, having the tied-highest Attack of the class with Vritra, and the tied-5th lowest HP in exchange. She’s easily the strongest Lancer in the game by base stats alone, and putting other deities like Romulus=Quirinus, Ereshkigal, and most importantly, that jackass Indra in their place. It’s also worth mentioning that the Lancer class has incredibly high stats overall, so that “lowest” HP is still fairly high in the grand scheme of things.

If that weren’t enough, Demeter also manages to sneak an absurd amount of Passives through. Magic Resistance, Independent Action, and Territory Creation are all familiar staples that improve her ability to shrug off Debuffs, inflict Critical Damage, and improve the damage and NP gain of her primary card type - Arts.

And matching that trio is Demeter’s unique passives - Divine Core of the Great land provides a notable Damage Cut to Demeter herself and her team, to a lesser extent, Production Manager has her continually gaining 1k HP each turn, and Emergence of Erinys makes her Debuff Success rate significantly better than normal.

With all those in play, Demeter’s offensive capabilities and durability are both notably better than on the surface, and she’ll be able to last a long time with that continual passive healing, especially.

So how does Demeter shape up? On the one hand, she’s certainly got a bountiful harvest to behold…and her crops as well:

  • +While her baseline damage isn’t anything spectacular, Demeter dishes out extremely good damage when hitting her chosen hated trait, and Earth attribute is by far one of the best to pick. Throwing her into a random farming node, the odds are more likely than not that the NPC enemies have the attribute, and for Servants it’s largely a toss-up. She also provides most of her damage boosts to her allies, which positions her well for more unique farming setups that require two different damage dealers.
  • +Demeter is immortal. Well, not just in the godly sense, but she’s hard to kill, and manages that with little effort. Between the amount of damage cut and healing she gets from her skills and passives, as well as a Guts buff to keep on as a buffer, and the Max HP buff keeping the whole team particularly healthy, it’s hard to imagine her going down to anything short of a NP that has buff removal tied to it.

But she’s also bound to suffer from famine eventually, as the seasons dictate:

  • -Demeter is one of those Servants with a great NP looping capability which is almost entirely tied to the 3-turn burst of buffs you get at the start of the battle. Without the Arts Up and NP gain buffs that her array of support options can provide, her regular card NP gain is pretty pathetic, and even if she can get to a full NP gauge before the skill rotation comes back around, the refund from it will be nowhere near as good. As a result, in drawn-out fights Demeter might actually feel underwhelming while the skills are on cooldown, where other options would still have a significant punch in better NP gain capabilities or Critical Damage.

I’ll be honest, for the first real Olympian machine god to be playable, Demeter has surprisingly few neat frills. Not that she’s bad by any means, but I figured the whole nature of those mechanical bodies would mean something unique in terms of gameplay design.

What we’ve got instead is a lady with two pretty good focuses - keeping her whole team alive with potent healing and defensive effects, and heavy investment in anti-Earth Attribute damage, which so happens to be the right thing to focus on. Summer Ibuki is extremely good despite not having that many damage boosts on paper due to her Earth Attribute effectiveness, on top of being a Berserker, and Demeter is in the same position minus the Berserker class.

But hey, short of being a Berserker or Avenger, Lancer is basically the next best class. You rock that Bronze medal, girl! All joking aside, Demeter is a solid universal farmer despite not being in the best class for it, and she can really push the damage numbers high when fighting her class advantage on top of her common effective damage. There may not be much else to note of her, but I won’t ever naysay a straightforward good damage dealer with some good team support perks. Rath™ Seal of Approval.

Outro

With that out of the way, love still yet lingers in the air, as well as the faint whiff of nanomachines…in the chocolates? Don’t tell me those machine conversions are permanent?

Ah well, can’t be any worse than what [REDACTED] put in my chocolates for Valentines in [REDACTED GACHA GAME]. The voiced scenes for each girl in FGO is certainly a step beyond that, credit to them.
