MMM - Fringe Freelancer made Fraud in Flagrant Forgery of Falsehoods, Fantastical Floozie Forms From Thin Air (Phantasmoon)
The Modern Magus Magazine
I swear, the one time I very definitively called an end to the year with the (presumed) Christmas Servant lineup, Lansengle sees fit to make me a liar.
Not that this Arcueid fanatic is complaining about having another big name SSR to obsess over, no sir.
But yes, I hope you’re all enjoying the holidays as I frantically write this on Christmas Eve to avoid leaving it delayed by the chaos of seasonal family gatherings. This is one of those times where the ways Japan and the West interpret holidays differently really shows, yeesh.

Phantasmoon
You know, I don’t really know what I was on earlier about Arcueid - this is the defender of justice, the innocent, and the Earth and Moon, the fantastical magical girl Phantasmoon, after all!
Her true identity is an absolute mystery, between the Crimson Moons on display in the background of her artwork, the fact Neko-Arc in her artwork doesn’t have its eyes shown and seems to be more like a doll, and how in her final ascension dialogue she talks about whether she’s an ally of Humanity or the Earth…hmm, that sounds familiar. Surely it’s nothing to worry about, including her Pretender class.
Joining the sparse lineup of SSR Pretenders, Phantasmoon is also the first SSR Pretender we can definitively call offensively-leaning (since Oberon frankly doesn’t count), and her statline matches, having by far the highest Attack stat of her class and rarity, in exchange for the lowest HP. It also shows us a good idea of the Pretender class’s offensive limits, as she’s packing attack rivalling the best Sabers, but with a notably lower HP stat.
Naturally, having such an aggressive statline is great for a damage dealer, so there’s no issues in spite of her relative frailty.
Phantasmoon also comes with a host of passives to back her up. Magic Resistance, Item Construction, and Independent Action provide a trio of Debuff Resistance, Debuff Success Rate Up, and Critical Damage Up buffs which improve both her offence and defence with Debuffs, and a minor boost to her Critical Damage output. While she has Territory Creation, it has no listed rank and provides no gameplay benefits, while her final passive, Avatar of the Holy Night, provides 5 Critical Stars each turn while she’s on the field, and a passive 20% boost to all her card types when she’s deployed on a Darkness field.
I’ll say now that, unlike Arcueid, who absolutely isn’t Phantasmoon for the record, she doesn’t have a way to establish a Darkness field and get those bonuses, so there’s another Servant Louhi synergizes with.
Even outside of the ideal terrain, getting a pretty significant star supply for free is a nice perk to have, and on top of her other solid passives it further bolsters Phantasmoon’s baseline performance.
So how does the fantastical Phantasmoon perform on the whole? Well on the one hand, she’s truly an unknown element, the dark side of the moon come to save the day, vanquishing evil and protecting humanity in one breath:
- +With her incredibly apt effective damage, highly spammable Buster NP, and overall decent base damage output, Phantasmoon can really bring the pain in difficult content. Her Pretender class gives her a fairly broad strike zone for targets, across both the knight classes and Alter Egos, and she can still perform well versus other Extra class foes so long as she can get her effective damage bonus.
- +Phantasmoon’s damage output isn’t necessarily restricted to difficult content, either. While the Evil trait isn’t likely to show up on farming nodes, she does have good, consistent refund for a Buster ST Servant, and the nature of her team gauge charge means she plays well with abnormal farming setups involving multiple damage dealer Servants for 90++ farming nodes. With Black Grail, Oberon support, and 1.5x class advantage, she can easily hit in the region of 800-900k damage on a wave 3 boss, roughly the benchmark for 90++ farming.
- +Let’s not ignore the supportive capabilities in Phantasmoon’s kit, either. Her team gauge charge and overcharge buffs are spectacular for improving the performance of her allies, whether they be damage dealers or supports, and if need be she can even adapt her critical-focused buffs to instead be placed on an ally, setting up near-guaranteed crits for multiple turns on top of the offensive buffs she provides. With the neat little ribbon of her NP keeping any given boss locked down with NP Seal, she provides more than just raw damage to work with.
However, beneath the surface of the lunar sea is a simmering blood-red surface, the incarnation of True Ancestors waiting to be unleashed:
- -Phantasmoon’s main weakness is essentially the same as any other Pretender or Alter Ego - difficulty in matching up to Servants pitted in the same scenario with 2x class advantage. For difficult quests this is somewhat mitigated by her anti-Evil effectiveness, which not many can match, but it does limit her capabilities in farming in exchange for her versatility. Adding to that, arguably her peak capabilities demand a lot of support, with double Koyanskaya and enough bond points/secondary copies for one Append skill unlock being pretty much non-negotiable, on top of the presence of a 3rd 50% gauge charge support.
Phantasmoon’s addition to the game is a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. The offensive Pretender lineup until now has more or less been limited to SR’s, which has presented something of a soft cap on what level of offence you could muster against Alter Egos when forming a team, but Phantasmoon fills that role very cleanly.
In difficult content, it’s hard to really complain about her capabilities. Great gauge charging, solid offensive damage on her regular cards, continuous critical star generation, and of course her consistent and hard-hitting NP against the common Evil trait mean she’s hard to pass up. She’s almost hyper-aggressive, but the NP seal effect on her NP essentially sheds off most of the drawback of lacking a defensive option, since an enemy NP is never coming her way so long as you keep the offence up.
She’s shakier in other contexts, but still useful. The versatility of her kit to support herself, her supports, or other damage dealers makes it hard to write her off even in situations she might not be an ideal pick, simply because a 30% team gauge charge is so rare, especially when paired with strong offensive support benefits.
To be frank, it’s hard to see another Pretender make Phantasmoon feel obsolete as a single-target offensive option, especially within the same card type. Whether you’re lacking in more versatile offensive Servants, or just a difficult content-focused Pretender (like me), she offers a little something for everyone, and is hard to simply overlook given her lack of serious competition within the same class. Rath™ Seal of Approval, with a recommendation.
Outro
Even if this was kind of foreshadowed by various things in the Christmas event, having to evaluate the real (and boy it better be this time) last Servant of 2024 on top of farm the second half of the Christmas event isn’t exactly a welcome occasion in the busy holidays.
But here I am, still writing. The things I do for this game, I swear…
With that out of the way though, you have to ask, is this filling the place of the New Year Servant, or are they planning something to blow Phantasmoon out the water? I suppose only time, and an unhealthy amount of turkey before the New Year, will tell…
