MMM - Adumbral Apostle Assassinates Auspicious Adversaries in Approval of Anniversary, Albeit As An Adolescent Angel of the Afterlife (Azrael)

Intro
So far as Anniversary Servants go, this one was pretty predictable - the dude has been implemented in the game for what feels like a year now, and it’s pretty close to one, and we even have our current story chapter involving the guy.
So unsurprisingly we’re welcoming Azrael, or the Old Man of the Mountain’s Lily form, to the Chaledean roster. He brings with him all the Anniversary celebrations, which are certainly nice, and the sting of playing a decade-old gacha game is thankfully lessened now that we’re on to the 11th year of its existence.
…most importantly, I can un-cap my Castoria’s bond level again, so I can actually USE Arts teams in content that gives notable Bond EXP. Yes, I have been deliberately not using my own Castoria because of that. It was painful.

Hassan-I-Sabbah (Azrael)
After all the memes about the OG Hassan demanding others’ heads for their transgressions, it’s poetic to have an ascension form where even his own head isn’t safe.
And if you told me in FGO’s conception that the game would have two headless Servants that herald death, and somehow neither of them are a Dullahan…honestly that’s just standard Nasuverse faire.
As one would hope, this younger Hassan-I-Sabbah doesn’t outstrip his older, more experienced self, possessing the same Attack stat as tied-2nd place for SSR Assassins, while rocking the 6th-worst HP stat. A frankly fantastic stat spread, and one especially needed given the Assassin class’s 0.9x Attack modifier pulling their offensive output down regardless of how high their Attack goes.
(My GOAT Shuten still outclasses him on both stats, though, just don’t compare their skill kits/NPs, I’ll take this win)
As for passives, Azrael has an absolute boatload of powerful ones. While not particularly high-ranking, his Magic Resistance, Presence Concealment, and Independent Action provide a minor boost to Debuff Resistance, and a bonus package to both Star Generation and Critical Damage, boosting the Assassin class’s natural disposition toward star generation and crits even further.
Meanwhile, of his unique passives, Protection of the Faith provides a much more significant boost to Debuff Resistance, making most debuffs fail half the time, 500 HP healing each turn, and a notable 10% boost to Attack and Defense at all times. Conversely, Organizer provides Instant Death Immunity, a bonus 100% Charm Resistance (effectively immunity), and a continual passive that slaps a 30% Instant Death Resistance down for 3 turns on enemies Azrael attacks with Arts cards.
Just as a baseline, these passives mean Azrael is deceptively durable, taking 10% less damage from all attacks at all times, as well as having the best package of immunities in the game, ignoring Instant Death, Charm, and all other debuffs half the time before even getting into his skill kit.
With all that said, how does the hot, young, shirtless Angel of Death stack up? Well on the one hand, you’d best make your peace with whichever Gods you worship, since the Evening Bell IS tolling for you:
- +Given how absurd Azrael’s offensive might was in the Grand Duel, it’s bizarre to say he manages to match it in player hands. With multiple forms of ramping damage boosts, a very accessible super-effective damage multiplier built into his NP, and strong offensive steroids and NP refund, Azrael is an utter menace who fits the moniker of the Angel of Death, with one of the most mighty and persistent offensive profiles in the game.
- +Azrael somehow isn’t lacking in utility and defense, either. His array of passive resistances, minor healing, and Evasion and Guts buffs built into his kit means at the very least Azrael and one Support of his choice are very hard to take down, and his capability to stack up Stun and provide gauge charge to his team are similarly superb, at a very short turnover as well. He’s very far from a selfish glass cannon, despite the edgy appearance.
However, even Death’s chosen isn’t immune to the dread of mortality, and he packs a very mortal weakness:
- -While Azrael has an absurdly strong offensive presence, a large sum of his offensive output is tied to successfully applying a series of debuffs successfully over multiple turns, and the man himself has absolutely zero boosts to improve his chance of applying debuffs. This means Servants with even basic Magic Resistance can avoid taking the colossal damage multipliers his NP attains, as well as the Stun and Defense Debuffs tied to the same skill. And supports that can provide coverage for that weakness are incredibly rare. In fact, only Gilgamesh Caster can provide Debuff Success Rate Up buffs to him, though that’s not too bad of a concession to make, given Gil Caster is already a solid Arts Support. Point being, be careful when bringing Azrael to a fight versus Servants, especially if they’re in the Knight classes and/or have the Goddess Core passive, it might be worth considering another Servant, or adding Gil Caster to the team to compensate.
I have to say, having a Servant that “focuses” on Instant Death manage to be absurdly good isn’t something I was expecting, but if any Servant could manage it, I guess it would be Azrael.
His capability for persistent, high-damage NPs is almost unrivalled, and he also packs a grab-bag of utility and support tools that mean his presence is felt besides the big numbers hitting the enemy health bar. It feels all the more impactful given the Assassin class isn’t really filled with many single-target heavy hitters, despite how the class flavour would make you expect the opposite.
Between the flexibility built into his kit and his sheer capability for dishing out damage, no other Assassin really rivals him, and I’d consider him one of the big names for Single target damage, even ignoring class advantage. He WILL out-damage the majority of Single-target Servants even when those Servants have class advantage over him, simply due to his relentless NP spam and consistently high damage output.
Just keep in mind that his damage output will crumble if his debuffs don’t land, or get cleansed, so certain fights will require careful team building to compensate. But besides that…he’s really, really good. Rath™ Seal of Approval, with a recommendation.
Outro
We’ve gotten the previews, so you all know what’s coming next - the much anticipated and (for me) dreaded Summer event, with a billion Servants in scanty outfits to look through.
Do not worry for me, with the sheer fuel of Dante and Lilith eye-candy I can endure any hardship! I’ll wish you all luck to pull for your favourites, whether it be Azrael now, or those swimsuits in the future! Until next time!
