The Modern Magus Magazine

Wake up and smell the roses, Master of Chaldea. The end has arrived, but is delayed until further notice, so we’ve got to push ourselves through a Beast or two before we can all go home.

This time, we have an event in honour of a Roman festival of all things, one to celebrate the coming of Spring and flowers, which is just swell. My burning question is this - Why are we having an event about Spring in the middle of January?

I’m sure there’s some reasoning for it, in game or outside, but it is funny to be literally welcoming an embodiment of Spring into Chaldea in the very middle of Winter.

Beni-Enma (Berserker)

I don’t know why this year’s Summer is the one to make me think this, but are we running out of frontrunner “popular” Servants to make into swimsuit Servants? Don’t get me wrong, I love Beni-Enma, but she isn’t really the face of famous and popular Servants you would expect to get a swimsuit alt.

I suppose every Summer event has their underdogs, and this one is a sparrow, I’ll have you know-dechi! Now let her cook!

For a Berserker, Beni-Enma’s stats end up hitting the middle of the road among her peers. With the 8th-worst Attack Stat and 8th-Highest HP stat for an SSR, she sacrifices some of the overwhelming offense her class is renowned for in exchange for more durability, though her offensive capabilities remain great in the grander scheme of things.

As for passives, she shares many of the same her original Saber form does - with a combo of solid Debuff Resistance, Star Generation, and Critical Damage buffs from her trio of Magic Resistance, Presence Concealment, and Independent Action, and the Skill Seal immunity from Ventriloquism, a very underrated perk that entirely avoids one of the more crippling debuffs to eat on the player side.

Speaking of eating, Beni-Enma’s last passive also covers her primary gimmick, and boy is it a complicated one that I’ll try to keep simple. Friend of Mayoiga provides Beni-Enma with 20% Buff Removal Resistance passively, but also provides a Fullness Gauge to the entire party when she’s deployed, a special metric which measures, as you might guess, how full a Servant is of food.

This bar starts at 0, and can be increased by Beni-Enma’s kit. The important part is that most Servants have a cap of 4 for their fullness, while Supergiant Servants have a cap of 8, since boy, they can pack a lot of meals. Whenever a Servant attacks, their Fullness Gauge drops by 1, and if they do a Critical, it drops by a further 1, since I guess they’re burning more calories?

That’s all you need to know for now, but the Fullness Gauge will interact with her kit in various ways.

What does this Iron Chef bring to the table? Well, on one hand, she’s cooked up something fierce - a mouth-watering buffet that will leave you begging even for scraps, shaking the chef’s hand vigorously afterwards:

  • +Beni-Enma sets a hard-to-beat standard for universal farmers, pushing the bar for Berserkers even further than previously thought possible, with excellent damage output, almost excessive NP refund, and a very applicable effective damage modifier that allows her to go even further beyond what’s expected. Given she manages that while also being durable and having strong regular card damage output, it really is hard to fault her anywhere as an offensive Servant.
  • +This Sparrow’s not lacking in supportive tools, either. Between the array of support buffs her first skill provides on rotation, as well as the continual healing and NP gauge charge her NP will provide, even her teammates will remain healthy and happy as she serves the enemy their Last Supper.

However, this chef wouldn’t escape without a harsh comment or two on Kitchen Nightmares - none are safe from the harshest and most vocal critic of all - a disappointed British bloke:

  • -Outside of farming scenarios, Beni-Enma does demand a level of micro-management in order to operate at full efficiency, which does place a strategic weight on using her at maximum power. Any turn you have her first skill off cooldown with a full ally on field is essentially wasting a buff, and deliberately adjusting your turns to let your supports on the team attack can be a tough adjustment, especially if you have to sacrifice damage output or NP gauge charging to enable it. Her NP’s buff does provide significant leeway to get the Fullness Gauge down, but it doesn’t let you ignore it either, and if you use skill cooldown effects to spam Beni-Enma’s skills, you often will be capped by the Fullness Gauge without careful thought.

Despite the complexity of the tools you use to get there, Beni-Enma’s ultimate purpose is surprisingly straightforward - she dishes out absurdly good damage while stacking up an array of buffs and benefits to her allies. I suppose no matter how expertly the meal is crafted, even a layman can appreciate the taste - and that taste is DAMAGE, delicious.

In all seriousness, Beni-Enma sets a new standard for AOE Arts NP damage, and it’s really hard to find solid competitors for her, given her sheer damage output, excellent class, and extremely high NP refund. While she does come with a fairly heavy investment cost (her overall potency drops pretty severely without maxed out skills, including that skill cooldown reduction append skill), she’s more than worth the price, though the level of micromanagement to keep her at maximum potency in drawn-out fights is pretty taxing.

If you’re in need of a real offensive powerhouse in the most versatile offensive Class in the game, Beni-Enma’s Berserker form is easily the best option available at this very moment. I think it speaks volumes that the only drawback I can identify for her is “the very broken skill requires planning to be used at 100% potential”. She comes with almost everything you’d want, and that’s more than enough to be a useful addition to one’s roster. Rath™ Seal of Approval, with a recommendation.

Kingprotea (Mooncancer)

Let’s be real, even without the previews at this year’s FGO Fest, you all know full well that Kingprotea would be involved in a Kaiju-focused Summer Event.

With that said, let me just take a glance at all her ascension arts and…hang on, I need to make a call.

Yeah, Nasu? Don’t ask how I got your number, I just got a question for you.

No, no, I’m not demanding updates on the second Tsukihime Remake, it’s about FGO, the new banner, you know the one.

Don’t feign ignorance, just answer the question - why is Kingprotea doing baby play?

She’s already filling one of your sick (if based) fantasies, and now you’re adding more to the mix? This game is horny as it is, you can’t be mixing that many fetishes into one Servant!

Ah, they hung up. All I can really say is…I hope Lasengle’s model artists and animators enjoyed making a Kaiju lady crawl on the ground like some kind of worm baby?

I am pleased to inform you that, perhaps for the first time a Servant has been added to a sizable Class roster, they are exactly in the middle of the road compared to their peers.

Sharing the same statline as Summer Kiara, Kingprotea’s Summer form hits a very happy equilibrium, having a somewhat high Attack stat for a Mooncancer, while having exceptionally good HP to improve her bulk.

As is typical for the Sakura Five, Kingprotea has a huge array of passives. Independent Action, Territory Creation, and Madness Enhancement are modest boosts to her various forms of damage, while Goddess Core is the same minor damage boost and significant Debuff Resistance bump that we know and love. Paired with all those is a unique passive, Yokai Inheritance (Detective). This skill provides a minor supply of Critical stars - 3 each turn, with an additional 2 stars if you’re on a Near Water battlefield.

Between her well-balanced base stats that don’t compromise on offence, and her strong passive kit, Kingprotea’s Mooncancer form is off to a good start.

With all that in mind, how does Kingprotea’s Mooncancer form perform? On the one hand, she’s going big, and squashing your home, and there’s little to do, lest you become a pancake, too!

  • +Offensively, Kingprotea has a lot going for her. Between the combo of extremely good ramping damage boosts on her NP and an accessible Effective Damage multiplier tied to her NP, she can start dishing out absurd damage once she spends multiple turns smacking the same target(s). That is admittedly not applicable to farming, but she isn’t entirely useless in that realm of content, either. And if you’re ever so inclined to use Kingprotea seriously for farming, her NP’s damage is only a single card before it on the chain away from dealing significantly more damage, albeit at the cost of time.
  • +The array of utility tools at Kingprotea’s disposal also lend into her aptitude for difficult content. Sure Hit to bypass the frequent annoying Evasion effects on bosses, Buff Removal on hit with normal attacks, Debuff Immunity and Invincible buffs, the list really goes on. Plenty of the mechanics that would stump other Servants hardly phase her, and she also has fairly good Critical Damage output to ensure she’s not only depending on her NP to strike hard - that Buster Gorilla card deck never goes out of fashion for dealing impactful critical chains.

However, she’s also a clumsy calamity likely to stumble into failure instead of falling into success:

  • -While I could hammer home her mediocre farming performance, I think the bigger issue Kingprotea has to contend with is actually the competition on the side of difficult content. She’s only going to be strictly in contention as a damage dealer when facing Avengers or Berserkers, and even then, she’s an AOE NP Servant that will frequently be facing single-target bosses. AOE damage has its place in some tough fights, naturally, but by large the biggest challenges FGO has to offer pits you against a single boss, and Kingprotea will struggle to match Single-Target Servants with similarly powerful ramping damage output, such as Monte Cristo. As a result it might be hard to find cases where she’s the optimal choice, even if she’s frequently a good one.

Kingprotea’s Mooncancer self is a jumble of fetishes, flagrant property damage, and colossal spilt drinks that I’m not sure who is actually ordering, but as a Servant she does perform pretty well.

While her capability for farming is more of a B- than an A+, she does have spectacular damage output in drawn out battles, which truly elevates her performance as a damage dealer in difficult content. Paired with her bevy of utility tools to safeguard herself and deny advantages from the enemy, she only really has her relatively weak class and competition to hold her back. The number of cases where you can call Kingprotea the best Servant for the job when facing a dangerous boss isn’t often, but for the vast majority of cases, the sheer damage output and reliability she brings to the table does mean she’s one of the more versatile Servants around. And even if she doesn’t get to spam the fantastic damage ramping from her NP every turn, her regular cards also benefit from the Defense Drops that her attacks inflict, further enhancing her reasonably strong critical damage.

She’s certainly a big deal, but she still has a fair bit of growing to do…just not the physical kind. Rath™ Seal of Approval.

Biscione (Caster)

I swear, nowadays, dragons are far too…employed. They’re your maids, they’re your office ladies, the good old fashioned “sit in a cave and guard your treasure” unemployed lifestyle just isn’t connecting with our draconic youth.

But boy, this lady knows how to fish. And she’s managing to climb the corporate ladder without wanting to end it all? Truly, dragons are legendary beasts.

From the get-go Biscione’s Caster form hits an impressive standard, having the 3rd-highest Attack of any SR Caster in exchange for the 7th-worst HP stat, a combo that clearly manages to boast strong offense without really sacrificing on bulk.

More notable, however, is her overwhelming array of, count it, 7 passives, probably breaking the record for passive skills on a Servant that actually provide gameplay benefits.

Magic Resistance and Item Construction we’re well familiar with, providing a notable increase to her Debuff Resistance and Debuff Success Rate, while Dragonkin is rarer, but provides a decent boost to Buster Cards and a very respectable passive damage cut. The remainder of her passives are a fourfold combo that tell the tale of this dragon lady’s journey into employment, gaining 10 Critical Stars on the first turn as a fresh hire, while also getting a minute-but-handy 5% boost to her NP gain, Star Generation, and Critical Damage as she gets comfortable with her position, and eventually needs a vacation to get away from it.

Hence why she’s in the fishing grindset on this tropical island. I respect it.

So how is this employed dragon-lady performing on the whole? Well on one hand, she’s met her monthly quotas, she’s got exceptional workplace ethic, and she’s well on the way for a raise, if not a promotion:

  • +Biscione might not be exceptional in either, but she’s both a very comfortable Caster farmer that could get a 100% refund off her NP with her eyes closed, and a dependable offensive option for difficult content, whose exceptionally strong ramping damage boosts when focusing on the same foe turn-by-turn gets particularly absurd. On the whole scope of the Servant roster her damage output in those roles aren’t particularly impressive, but for Casters specifically she’s very much a top dog for offensive might, which certainly can matter when you’re factoring in Class Advantage.
  • +Despite my focus on her personal damage output, Biscione does also provide a very solid supportive loadout for her allies. The Arts Up, Critical Damage, and Effective Damage buffs she provides are essentially all useful for her team given the star generation she gets online in the same skill, and her capability to keep Poison stacked on the entire enemy for 3 turns straight. If you’re on a Near Water field specifically, those buffs get very competitive with some of the stronger support Servants’ buff arrays, so it’s worth keeping in mind.

However, the company is unfortunately undergoing some restructuring, and it seems the position of “Executive Dragon-Lady Fishing Consultant” is going to become redundant in the new structure:

  • -While Biscione sort of lacks an Achilles’ Heel kind of weakness, she does have a collection of inadequacies which add up - her awful regular card NP gain and very standard gauge charger means she does essentially need a CE with starting gauge charge or an ally to fill in the same role in order to get her NP rolling. Once she starts using her NP she basically never stops, but getting there requires external gauge charge.
  • -Furthermore, a decent portion of her damage output (and her NP refund, too) relies on successfully landing those Poison debuffs on her targets, and even with her passive boost to Debuff Success, she can end up missing against targets with half-decent Magic Resistance. It’s not as awful as it is for some Servants if those debuffs miss (looking at you, Azrael), but it is a notable flaw. And lastly, she lacks any kind of legitimate defensive tool, leaving her completely dependent on her allies for protection. It’s probably not worth its own bullet point, but it is an issue.

Biscione’s Caster form is a surprisingly efficient take on the normally-joke formula of focusing on DoT damage for your offensive might. She technically does stack up a number of Poison debuffs in concert with debuffs to amplify their damage output, but that damage is utterly miniscule compared to what she does with her actual NP and regular attacks, the real highlight of her kit.

By the standards of a Caster, she’s an offensive powerhouse, packing a respectable farming performance and particularly deadly ramping damage output for difficult content, so long as she can reliably land her debuffs. She does all that while also not eschewing the supportive identity of the Class, bringing a very useful package of offensive buffs for the team that gets even more effective when fishing for the correct field type.

The extent of her offensive capabilities in difficult content goes further than it seems on paper, too, since she has a direct damage scaling based on the number of Poison debuffs on her targets. With Command Codes that inflict Poison on her cards, she gets to stack up 2 Poison debuffs per regular card attack, which can bring her Effective Damage buff’s bonus up to 100% incredibly quickly, as well as getting more amplified Poison damage off, for however much that matters.

She’s rather unconventional, but the way her kit is designed allows her to excel at both farming and difficult content, even if she’s not dishing out groundbreaking damage numbers in either field. Rath™ Seal of Approval.

Outro

Ah, Summer…those deathly rays of heat from the Sun can light up my life, but they can’t make me write the MMM fast enough to finish the first Servant batch before the second is already out.

The level of motivation this magus has for writing about their faves compared to just normal Servants in swimsuits is on a whole other level! And I’m not crazy about anyone in this batch! Now, as I briefly depart to write the second part, embed it into your skull that I am extremely excited to write about Lilith and Komachi’s hot dad!

Farewell!
