Intro

Well folks, this may very well be the last time I can say it, given only one Arcade-exclusive Servant that isn’t an alt remains - ONORE, AKEIDO!

The end of updates to Arcade really means the last time I’ll mention it is likely gonna be Sita’s inclusion, which would require one hell of a lore workaround to beat the “Rama and Sita can never be united” rule.

But the star of the show is Jacques de Molay, though it’s weird they’ve done this genderbent, straight-laced knightly version of our resident blasphemous apostle. And he’s even claiming to be the original one! Oh, you’re so quirky, fake Jacques!

Jacques de Molay (Saber)

I wonder if Jacques’ ascension art was completed rather recently, since that snowboarding outfit really rocked me out of nowhere. Did Kouhaku Kuroboshi get really into the Winter Olympics?

…not that I’m complaining, snowboarding is both very cool and produces incredible drip for a Servant.

As an SSR Saber, Jacques has some juggernauts to contend with for his base stats, and unsurprisingly he doesn’t exactly match up well. With the tied 8th-lowest Attack for an SSR Saber and part of a big multi-way tie for 8th-highest HP, he sits on the middle ground for the class, being very unremarkable in both bulk and offense, but not losing out too much on either.

Without much insane lore or good joke material to his name, Jacques also has the two very standard Saber passives, with a solid boost to Debuff Resistance from Magic Resistance and a minor boost to his Quick cards off of Riding.

So overall, how does Jacques perform? Well, on one hand, his body is a Temple…ar and I’m gonna pray to it:

  • +For an offensive Servant Jacques, as is the trend nowadays, has a very useful package of supportive tools, providing very effective defensive, utility, and offensive buffs to his whole team. While Buff Removal resistance isn’t especially rare nowadays, having it as a support tool for other Servants is, and doubly so when it’s on a damage dealer who can pass it selectively, instead of a dedicated support Servant.
  • +While Jacques is a capable farmer, he really shines in difficult content where his aforementioned supportive tools and his NP’s effective damage modifier can really stack up. Maxing out the 10 Burn stack is incredibly fast with Command Codes and regular attack chains on the table, and the damage output that comes from that +100% damage modifier can’t really be understated.

Jacques? Your Foreigner form is a faker? Hah, I think you’re the fake Templar around here! Go ahead and make me eat those words:

  • -As good as some of Jacques’s tools are, his lesser gauge charging ability and shaky damage output for universal farming purposes puts him in a mediocre position as a farmer. His other perks can make up for it, but there are a lot of Sabers in the game who outperform him in damage output, convenience, and flexibility for farming, so he has to fight an uphill battle on that side.

In terms of lore, I’ve always considered Jacques a very emblematic “typical” Servant. While the heresy accusations resulting in his non-Alter Ego alter ego are interesting, in strict terms of power he’s a typical knight reaping the benefits of the Saber class’s parameters with a modest NP and few unique tools to throw into the mix like a Knight of the Round table might.

Perhaps intentionally, he sort of falls into a similar mould in FGO’s gameplay. His capability for farming is very standard for an AOE Saber, and while he has some useful tools, he’s hardly the de-facto best at anything.

That said, Jacques’ performance in difficult content is certainly above par, and his supportive tools aren’t half bad if you lack some of the bigger name support Servants in the game, or need someone who can both provide supportive buffs and hit AOE damage simultaneously. I can certainly say he has the tool to tackle fights with varied challenges, whether sheltering himself as the primary damage dealer or as a tech choice in a supportive role.

He’s not particularly special, but Jacques has his uses, and can really turn up the heat in drawn-out fights, which is more than enough to carve out his own little niche. He’s a fine option if you’re in need of an AOE Saber or one of those newly-fangled “half-supports” Lasengle likes making. Rath™ Seal of Approval.

Outro

With the gameplay implications out of the way, our event for White Day this year, much like the last introducing Dante, at least has some neat story implications. All the Crypters are back? Even Ophelia, who essentially had a Lancer’s life expectancy compared to the persistently spotlighted other Crypters. Surely shenanigans are afoot.

But that’s how things are when the CBT event comes around every year. I mean, CBC, sorry, mommy. Shit, the mommy was last month, even my freudian slips are a month late.

That leaves us waiting for…something. Man, I’m not clocked in with the roadmap for this year. Until…then?
