The Modern Magus Magazine

It’s honestly funny how long the spectre of Strange Fake’s anime has loomed over the Fate community, it feels like almost yesterday, but the prologue episode we got was…3 years ago. We can speculate as much as we want, but boy that’s a LONG delay to producing a single season of anime.

And with that single season, I feel like the plot of Strange Fake has barely been dug into. Which leaves me wondering what on earth can happen in this collab without either dancing around a lot of Strange Fake’s original plot or straight up spoiling it.

That said, such chaotic energy is pretty befitting given who’s acting as show(wo)man for this collab’s presentation…

Francois Prelati

The greatest nuisance magus of today VS The greatest nuisance magus of all time (they’re the same person). There’s little to surmise of Prelati given they’re basically the Nasuverse equivalent of an internet troll who’s so stuck in memes and twitch chat jokes that they can’t hold a regular conversation with anyone, but they somehow have enough power and influence to make you put up with them despite how much of a nuisance they are.

Sorry, my heart has room for only one gregarious 4th-wall breaking lady, and that’s BB.

As part of the Caster Class, Prelati is unsurprisingly rather middling in their base stats. While they do pack 3rd-highest Attack of any Caster in exchange for the tied-2nd-lowest HP, in the broader scale of Servants, Prelati’s offensive power is pretty mediocre, just among the best damage output you’ll find in their class.

Prelati’s passives are similarly pretty normal for a Caster, packing the standard Class skill duo of Territory and Item Creation to boost their Arts cards and Debuff success rate by a decent sum, as well as a pitiable level of Divinity that provides basically no benefits in exchange for a weakness to anti-Divine effects.

So how does Prelati shape up overall? On one hand, they pack the best of both worlds - a cute and pure (lmao) maiden, the mysterious and courteous (rofl) gentleman, coaxing you into a gentle world of fantasy:

  • +Prelati has a surprisingly robust supportive toolkit, especially if you stick to Francois form for a fight - their Invincible team buff is an incredible thing to have in your pocket, especially since it protects the team in further turns with the Terror and Critical Rate Down packaged with, while their team gauge charge and offensive buffs from skills as well as the grab-bag of debuffs from Francois’s Grand Illusion can combine to bolster an Arts ally’s damage output immensely.
  • +When Prelati has a drawn-out fight to build up a wide array of debuffs on their targets and swap forms to gain the best of both worlds, their damage output really begins to shine. The effective damage boost from Francesca’s NP really can’t be understated, giving a punch to their offensive output that’s hard to compete with, especially from other Casters.

However, you can’t trust a single word in favour of this one-person tag team, they’re scandalous, marvellous, malignant, enigmas, and madness made to mock mankind:

  • -The downfall of Prelati really just comes to their focus on debuffs. While the offensive power they can provide for either themselves or their team is very impressive, the number of situations in the game where you get to plaster a single enemy with debuffs that won’t be easily resisted or cleansed by skills or gauge breaks aren’t as common as you’d hope, and the payoff Prelati gets is also limited by the Caster class’s offensive prowess being the worst in the game. They do have places they’ll shine, it’s just not as universal as one would hope.

The greatest trick Prelati ever played on the world was convincing them to pull for them.

Okay, to be less dramatic, Prelati is simply fine. As far as AOE Casters go, they’re one of the more convenient ones to use so long as you’re facing Class Advantage, and the team support they provide when put into Francois mode is frankly pretty damn good, if too focused on applying debuffs.

As an offensive AOE Caster, Prelati is one of the better choices around there, it’s just most AOE Casters have stiff competition from potent universal farmers in the Berserker/Avenger/Pretender/Alter Ego classes, and their supportive capabilities are worth using, but ultimately not competitive with big names like Castoria or Summer Tiamat.

So they’re just pretty solid. Good to pick up if you need to slot in a gap in your Caster lineup, but this game has a lot of good Casters - just ask my Gold Caster Skill Gem supply! Worthwhile if Prelati fills a role for you, but fine to skip all the same. Rath™ Seal of Approval.

Hippolyta

Say, have any of you heard the concept of a “Losing Heroine”?

No? Any takers? Just saying, Hippolyta kind of fits in both lore and appearance. And if that’s the case then Heracles is…yeah, I’ll just leave it at that.

So far as stat distributions go, Hippolyta sits on the more defensive side of the 4* Rider lineup, with the 7th lowest Attack Stat and 4th-highest HP stat lined up against her competitors. While she does have a solid total overall, it’s not great that she packs such a low attack stat in the larger scheme of things.

Her passives are also rather standard, possessing the Rider staples of Riding and Magic Resistance to bolster her Quick card performance and Debuff Resistance alike by a moderate sum, as well as high-ranking Divinity to provide a minute boost to card damage in exchange for more Effective Damage weaknesses.

So how does Hippolyta shape up, overall? On one hand, she has the dignity and might of the Amazones backing her, rivalling even the loathsome Bezos:

  • +Hippolyta only has one thing going for her, but it’s easily the best thing to be a one-trick pony over - she hits really hard. With a solid ensemble of offensive buffs backing her at base, a welfare NP5, and the ability to chain her NP’s into a consistent Buster Critical damage game, it’s unsurprising that her offence is that good. If she has the good fortune of being able to land her common Effective Damage trait that damage explodes to new heights.

However, she’s ignoring her own fatal flaws that will inevitably lead to her humbling defeat:

  • -Her kit overall doesn’t have much depth, essentially focusing entirely on her damage output with some minor team support pit stops on the way, but more importantly, her ability to loop NP’s is entirely dependent on her support lineup. Hippolyta’s 30% gauge charger gets her a solid part of the way to another NP, but without Koyanskayas amplifying her capabilities, her poor ability to gain NP gauge from her own cards will make her feel incredibly slow. She needs the premier Buster support lineup to perform at a reasonable level, essentially.

Hippolyta’s capabilities as a Servant are very straight-to-the-point, and somehow in a good way. With the saturation of Welfare Servants available to the player at this stage, even if you missed their event, newer Welfares need something pretty outstanding to elevate themselves compared to others in the same Class.

So how does she stand out compared to the Sakamoto Ryoma’s and Cinderella Liz’s of the world? Simple - she hits far harder than they could ever hope to. Even Ryoma, with his NP Strengthening, doesn’t hit as hard as Hippolyta’s NP does at base, and once you throw her Effective Damage bonus in the picture, she might as well be on another level compared to other Welfares. This comes combined with her capability for Buster Crit damage, having the gorilla card deck to maximize damage output, and a wealth of Critical Stars to utilize. While her Critical Damage boost of +50% after getting a NP off isn’t too impressive, it’s worth remember all her female allies benefit from a similar level of offensive might, so the whole team’s damage output is elevated by her presence, assuming you kick Merlin (no amount of Buster Support stops him from being a man) off the roster.

And that’s really how Hippolyta manages to stand out despite having some pretty defined flaws. She just does the one thing you want most really well. Have another Single Target Servant who hits harder against a non-Chaotic target? Just don’t bring her. Hippolyta has the simultaneous benefit of being available to everyone and also almost zero investment to use, so you can essentially assume she’s only ever used when she’s optimal. And with that damage output, she’s often shockingly viable. Rath™ Seal of Approval with a recommendation.

Outro

That might be everything for the first stage of the Strange Fake collab, but it’s not precisely the end of the Servants. Anyone who’s kept up with the news is well aware that the mysterious intimidating silhouette for the 2025 Servant teasers was never implemented, and said figure appears again in this event.

It makes sense in hindsight - Strange Fake’s anime production probably got delayed, then FGO couldn’t fit a collab in its tight schedule leading to the end of Part 2, and now we have a clear telegraphed 3rd Servant to look forward to.

…Now just what the hell is it? I guess we’ll find out soon!
