MMM - Misfortuned Maven Maligned, Made Main Malefactor, Mayday as Misrepresented and Malicious Mocked (GudaGuda Shinsengumi The End Part 2)

Intro
It is a year in the history of Fate/Grand Order. A very cool and story-prominent Servant in the latest GudaGuda event remains an NPC, with no indication of when, if ever, they will be playable.
I have no fucking clue what year it is, because this has happened like, at least 3 times already.
This one feels especially grating since like, with her explosion themes and well, cannon, Danjou feels like the actual coming of the mythical (and, sadly, not real) cannon witch from the silhouette a couple years back. But nope, the only thing that ended up blowing up was her hopes of being playable, in her own face.
Must’ve rolled a 1 on that giant D20 of hers.

Kondo Isami
Well, no point bemoaning what we don’t have, and instead focus on what we do. In a true conclusive fashion to the GudaGuda storyline (which is definitely ending, pinkie swear), we get the famous commander of the Shinsengumi, giving us a pretty close to complete roster of their leadership.
Though on reflection, it’s funny how I had a stronger reaction to his identity reveal just thinking “oh god, he’s handsome” instead of actually considering his identity. Pako is just incapable of drawing average-looking men.
Isami has the last chance to redeem the cursed Japanese statline, shaping up as an SSR Saber, plenty of competition to be lined up against. With the tied 8th-lowest Attack of an SSR Saber, and the tied 4th-highest HP, Isami manages to buck the trend and actually have a fairly good overall base stat total, somehow even objectively outclassing Mordred…but I’m not here to gripe about the lore.
Having such a solid stat total directed toward his HP is a bit of a shame, but a low Attack stat for a Saber is still a little bit above average overall, and getting significant bulk in return isn’t too bad of an investment.
In a more disappointing turn, Isami just has two very standard passives to his name, with moderate Magic Resistance and Riding, providing reasonable boosts to his Debuff Resistance and Quick card, little compared to what some Servants have at their disposal.
So, is Isami worthy of any devotion? Well, on the plus side he’s organized, armed, and certainly dressed to impress, and he has to be admired for somehow making Japanese people glorify a police force - that takes skill:
- +Isami’s kit might look like it lacks substance, but he does devote all his resources in the right place to become a very consistent NP spammer, with frankly absurd levels of refund and damage output that competes with Muramasa’s, even with his fellow Japanese Saber having a NP strengthening behind him. With how heavily Isami can invest in sheer damage output, with his refund thoroughly sufficient, he punches well above his weight, and functions well as a Universal Farmer.
- +It might slip under your radar, but Isami’s supportive capabilities are also not bad at all. While just having a Charisma buff to his name and a conditional gauge charger might not seem like much, the consistency to which he can spam his NP means it’s essentially a persistent debuff cleanse which also provides a not-insignificant boost to ALL the team’s cards (as he makes them Shinsengumi essentially permanently). With Tiamat Archer as a partner, for example, he can piggyback off Tiamat’s NP and gauge overcharge to provide notably offensive buffs to himself and his allies on the regular, while naturally benefitting from Tiamat’s own supportive power.
However, reality sometimes is not as kind. Don’t look up the Shinsengumi leadership’s mortality rate…or their average age of death. I don’t know by what metric you should measure success, but those ones aren’t great:
- -While Isami’s offensive profile is impressive when he can repeatedly slam his NP against 3 targets, it dampens significantly once the dummies available to farm refund off of dry up. In spite of his spectacular refund, his regular card NP gain is awful, and his Critical Damage output is solid, but not as good as many competing Sabers out there. As a result, he might not be able to transfer his farming performance into difficult content too effectively, in spite of having some handy tools to support his team in such scenarios.
I have to say, this game has some Servants who really manage to turn around my impression of them at the very last hour. If I had to go off base stats and skills alone, I’d say Isami feels like an SSR plastered with an SR Servant’s kit, and such an awful NP gain profile that it’s hard to ever feel good using him.
However, his NP is simply so great for refund it essentially flips all that on its head. Isami might be lacking in special frills or capability for regular card damage, but his NP has a decent bedrock of offensive buffs behind it, and very few NP’s in the game can match his level of refund - even Melusine Ruler, a Servant I very much gas up for having superb damage output and refund alike, can’t match his level of refund.
But to be clear, Isami does still have flaws. His damage output is pretty much solely carried by the fact he can run Black Grail with 0 drawbacks, and even then he’s struggling to match many of the best Universal Farmers for damage output, and he’s pretty much a write-off when he can’t fight 3 foes at once with his NP.
Isami has gone all-in on his farming capabilities, and all it does is make him a fairly good farmer, at the cost of everything else. Being able to square off a large portion of the game’s content and occasionally jump out to play in difficult content when his AOE damage output is needed is hardly a bad thing, but it is also less than what some other Servants can offer. But boy, I was expecting him to be significantly worse based on how some of his characteristics were like. Rath™ Seal of Approval.
Outro
Welp, that’s it for this event. I suppose we can hear the wails of a cannon-wielding lady from her NPC-Jail cell for a while yet, as FGO steadily marches towards the end of its final arc. Only 3 months away at this point, and we know there’s still a lot of content to come.
Suppose we’ll just have to wait and see, shan’t we?
