Intro

Ah, ten good ‘ol years with this game. Playing anything for a decade feels pretty absurd, and FGO has quite literally been an eternal companion for my own adult life so far.

As you might expect of such a milestone, we have a huge anniversary. Quartz raining from the sky, campaigns all over, and most importantly, the Anniversary Servant. It’s been a long-ass road, but we officially have our original Director back, without doing any fix-it fanfiction or spinoffs.

...The only thing to do now is a Goredolf versus Olga-Marie deathmatch for the title. I know our chubby pal can do it!

U-Olga Marie

I don’t think this was much of a surprise after her playable appearance in LB7 on top of the Elemental Olga-Marie fights, but boy we got her basically immediately after the 4th fight.

I also love how much of the lore surrounding U-Olga Marie has Nasu’s hand evidently in it, Un-Beasting her very literally for the sake of allowing her to be a Servant fighting for Humanity.

…and boy I love both her dress and director outfit ascensions. As a bonus she even fires literal danmaku in her animations, which is amazing for a Touhou fan like me.

So far as her bases go, U-Olga Marie is pretty unremarkable. She’s the bulkiest of the trio of Beasts playable in the game, but she doesn’t have a particularly huge HP for the Attack stat she’s saddled with, having easily the weakest offense of the Beasts and generally being pretty middle of the road for overall stat distribution. Far from the hardest-hitting SSR in the game going by Attack alone, in other words.

In terms of passives, U-Olga Marie has the Caster staples of Item and Territory Creation, boosting her Debuff Success Rate and Arts performance, as well as high-ranking Divinity to provide minor bonus damage and the associated weaknesses.

However, she also packs two pretty expansive unique passives - Guardian of Human Order and Backlight. The former provides U-Olga Marie with a hefty always-active Guts buff for foes who have the Threat to Humanity trait, as well as setting her Extra Card to AOE at all times.

Backlight, meanwhile, is the partner to Guardian of Human Order, providing a plethora of buffs to herself when she triggers a Guts buff - 20% Buster Up and 1-time Invincible for 3 turns, as well as 10% NP gauge, albeit at the cost of reducing her Max HP by 1000 for 3 turns. Notably this can apply from any form of Guts, so U-Olga Marie inherently gets much better when supplied with external sources of Guts to net those buffs.

The last thing to note is that U-Olga Marie’s class, Unbeast, is essentially a bizarro version of Ruler. She resists almost all damage, has offensive advantage against Mooncancer, and a weakness to Avenger. The Bizarro part is that she has an offensive advantage against Foreigner, but a defensive weakness, making her a glass cannon against them.

This dimorphism of U-Olga Marie also extends to her skill kit, so I’ll be covering the variants of her skills in each form as I go along.

So how is U-Olga Marie on the whole? On the one hand, she’s the true prodigy of the Animuspheres, our ever-dependable Director, and frankly I’m just glad to have her back at last:

  • +While the farming numbers might not show it, U-Olga Marie is insanely powerful offensively in difficult content. With her capabilities to NP spam and ensure her own Brave chains in her Alien God form, as well as her skill CD reduction, she’s very adept at mounting insane offensive pressure with effective damage that targets a large range of bosses. The NP gain from using regular cards often bridges the gap that is an issue in her farming setups, making her a force to be reckoned with.
  • +U-Olga Marie is simply a supportive superthreat. She provides fairly good offensive boosts to the party in Attack, Critical Damage, and Buster boosts, as well as her huge Extra card damage boost that can go pretty crazy (I’d love to see a Musashi Extra attack with that boost active). She’s also packing powerful defensive support, with her team Invincible buff and Debuff Immunity blocking incoming damage and debuffs, on top of her NP Seal to delay enemy NP turns.
  • +Between her fine balance of offense and defense, U-Olga Marie really exemplifies the power of a “half-support” in the same vein as BB Dubai. She provides offensive buffs and gauge charge, has hard defensive support options, but instead of being a passive skill machine that drops some form of supportive NP, U-Olga Marie has the capability to lay down very good damage even if she’s not the supportive focus, and even her NP provides offensive support, setting up higher Overcharge for her allies and applying a 1-turn damage boost from its Card Resistance debuffs and Attack Up buff.

However, we do have to re-introduce her to Chaldea, it’s changed a lot - Starting with the Command Room. Here we have the visual representation of SHEBA, observing the future of the Earth’s surface…you can even walk right inside the projection of the globe, Director, give it a try! Huh? Why are you screaming?

  • -In spite of her absurdly good performance in difficult content, the fact remains that, in spite of being capable on paper, she’s pretty awkward to apply in farming content. She’s 10% gauge refund in a turn short from simplifying things immensely, but without it she either lacks in damage output or gauge charging capability, meaning she can’t really farm without class advantage unless facing Human/Star attribute foes, something that’s not too common in farming.

Yet again following the tradition of Anniversary Servants, U-Olga Marie is both incredibly interesting to play with, and incredibly good. She might come with some limitations that are infuriating at times, but the modular nature of her kit as well as her class advantage making her something of a true virtuoso means there’s little content you can’t bring her to…well just don’t make her fight Avengers.

She’s in this unique position where she has so many small synergies you could bring her along for that it’s hard to really pin her into a single specific role - she’s great as your sole damage dealer, she’s great as a secondary AOE servant to manage a complex farming setup with, she’s great as a half-support that uses her own NP as a way to bolster the damage of her allies. In addition the way her Alien God form’s gauge charger pans out on top of her NP’s level scaling means investing in NP5 for her to reach a max of 300% gauge charge and the maximum Attack boost is more worthwhile than on other Servants. Not that I’m encouraging whaling for her, but it’s another interesting part to how U-Olga Marie plays.

The only flaw I’m really bummed about is how her Unbeast class pans out. Unlike her fellow(?) Beasts, she lacks a wide-reaching class advantage to ensure she can strike hard in a good range of content, instead having to depend on her neutral damage numbers to compete with better Servants offensively. But honestly, with the tools at her disposal, her damage output was never the primary factor for picking up U-Olga Marie.

If you’re in the market for an offensive and supportive powerhouse that can be deployed to almost any content, U-Olga Marie is definitely on the table, and so far as offensive “Rulers” go, she’s certainly one of the best, if not the best. Rath™ Seal of Approval, with a recommendation.

Outro

With the mass of presents dealt to us this anniversary, it’s worth remembering that it’s not just the Director’s concern to spend Saint Quartz on. The Summer event is just around the corner, and the second banner remains an utter unknown. Those who are colossal fans of Passionlip and her…colossals are already aware, but the Summer gacha is a whole other beast to contend with. Heck, given we got Space Ereshkigal last year, maybe we’ll have to capitalize that B.

But that’s all for the future. Until then, bathe in your 1000 Saint Quartz, Ordeal Call 4-Clearers, and pray for fortune!
