Modern Magus Magazine - Illustrious Informative Item's Inauguration (Archer of the Apocalypse)

Intro
Bear in mind the Profile for this Servant will have identity spoilers for those who care about the story.
Now, I had a crazy idea seeing all the buzz on the subreddit about the game we’ve all been talking about - Fate / Grand Order! Shortly following its release date in July this year (2015), and with the load of Servants introduced with the game’s launch, how about I write a series of articles going over a variety of Servants and what their kits, both Skills and Noble Phantasms, offer as team members, and break down if they’re worth investing your very limited currencies into?
Well there’s no point in asking, since I’m already doing it! While you keep on farming that node in Septem with a Gold Manticore for the illustrious claw drop, and we stare longingly at the yet-unreleased pages and gears keeping us from getting Waver to his 3rd ascension (and why would we, his skills don’t give gauge charge or anything!), I’ll break down the first of the Servants available, starting from the highest number to switch things up a little!
Starting with Number ██, Archer of the Apocalypse!

Archer of the Apocalypse
I have to say, it’s crazy that the present mobile game genre is taking such a sudden turn towards more risque character designs - she’s barely wearing anything at all! The art quality is certainly great, though. Her artist, “Pochi”, doesn’t have that many works to their name right now, but they’ve apparently got a work debuting at Summer Comiket next month. The name? “Ane Naru Mono”...I wonder if it’ll be a hit?
Hmm? What are you talking about, dear reader? Vtuber? What’s that? Kizuna Ai? Who’s that? Sounds like a load of crazy nonsense that'll never catch on.
For an SSR Archer, this… Onee-san, shall we call her? This Onee-san leans toward the bulkier side, With the 5th-lowest Attack among her compatriots in exchange for the 4th-highest HP. Between her low Attack and the Archer class’s 0.95x Attack multiplier, she’s not going to hit particularly hard for an SSR, but she does have an impressively high HP in a class that doesn’t sacrifice too much in offense to begin with. If she’s focusing solely on damage it’s a poor position to be in, but durability can have its perks, too.
She’s got a much better deal out of her passives - Magic Resistance and Independent are her class’s standards, boosting her ability to shrug off debuffs and dish out Critical Damage, but The Engraver and Primordial Rune are more unique passives to her roster, the former providing a Goddess Core-like improvement to her Debuff Resistance and regular card damage, on top of passive Buff Removal Resistance, while Primordial Rune grants her a passive Critical Resistance that means she essentially won’t ever be slapped by a stray crit unless the enemy buffs their own critical rate further.
As always, the Goddess Core combo of absurdly high Debuff Resistance is notably a great perk to have, with it bordering on immunity to debuffs with lower application rates like most Stun/Charm skills.
So how does our mysterious weaver of fate stack up? Well on one hand, she’s got enough tries to re-do a fight to marathon the Zero Escape series, Re:Zero, and Groundhog Day and have time to spare, if time is even a concept at all for her:
- +The primary takeaway for Archer of the Apocalypse is how potent of a supportive Servant she is. Unlike many “Half-support”s I’ve dubbed in the past, she has the offensive, utility, and gauge charge support to genuinely outclass Castoria as an Arts support option in some scenarios, and the consistent level of buff/debuff level control she offers is unique enough to make her stand out among those competitors. To be clear, I don’t think she’s better than Castoria as a support overall, due to the flaws I’ll address, but she is certainly better in scenarios where you value offensive damage output more.
- +As an AOE damage dealer, she’s one of the most reliable and resilient options available in the game. Her damage output alone is certainly in the upper echelons, and she can very easily get out of control in drawn-out fights, but the real place she shines is her defensive properties. Between her continual Buff and Debuff Removal, as well as her resilience to Debuffs and Buff Removal alike, all on top of a pretty solid form of healing sustain and enemy NP gauge drain, Archer of the Apocalypse is really unlikely to get bogged down by the mechanics of a fight, and can improve her team’s durability while not sacrificing on offense. Such benefits can even apply when she’s in a supportive role - most of her damage buffs apply to herself even when supporting an ally, and that NP is worth throwing out for the NP gauge drain if nothing else, but the damage output will remain solid, unlike the ticklers that Oberon or Koyanska’s NP’s tend to be.
However, she also can’t cut it at the best of times, so perhaps she should go back to auditioning as the 4th “Cursed Sword Sister” (Nobody is getting that reference, are they?):
- -As good as her many support tools are, Archer of the Apocalypse has a very notable lack of hard defensive tools, whether for herself or her team. Not even a single Guts buff to be found, and it does severely tank her capability to be the sole source of support in a team composition, Castoria-rivalling damage boosts be damned. If you’re solely looking to damage race the enemy, or rely on her NP gauge drain to avoid incoming NP’s then she’s still worthwhile, but most of the time this Onee-san will be holding hands with Castoria in order to avoid being obliterated by incoming NP damage. While I don’t think it’s a huge problem, she does also have the issue of not being able to be supported by 2 copies of herself for farming, which does cut off the hypothetical 3-turn loop that lets her re-use her 1st skill on the 3rd turn for a damage boost.
If I had a penny every time the most recent SSR Archer was an interesting support option with tools that rival the existing support meta while also being solid offensive options, I would have two, but it’s weird it happened twice in a row.
Despite the comparisons to Summer Tiamat, Archer of the Apocalypse doesn’t feel precisely the same, given Arts teams already have a wealth of powerful supportive Servants to rely on, unlike Quick, and this Onee-san’s offensive capabilities are far beyond Summer Tiamat’s incredibly scary but limited Quick Critical Damage output. She has some of the best farming capability in the Archer class, and manages that while also being a superb option for difficult content and an alternative support option to Castoria, one that frankly outclasses her when her supported Servant(s) need to make use of Skill Cooldown Reduction.
The number of Servants out in the game where you can reasonably say “this is one of the better offensive options” and “this is one of the best support options” in the same sentence is…exactly Aesc or U-Olga Marie? And even then that’s being pretty generous. I’m a lot more confident giving such epithets to Archer of the Apocalypse, simply because she IS that gal.
Due to the sheer versatility she brings to the table, on top of being able to perform exceptionally well in both roles available, I naturally can’t give this Onee-san anything but a Rath™ Seal of Approval, with a recommendation.
Outro
Boy, isn’t that an interesting Servant to have in our opening batch? I’ve been anticipating Fate / Grand Order since its announcement, and I’m sure we have a lot of fun ahead of us!
The dragons in Orleans were very easy to kill, Septem’s story was very in-depth and well-written, and I can’t wait to see the relationship between our protagonist and the supporting cast like Director Olga Marie develop! Hmm? That sounds off? You’re allowed to disagree, but hating on Olga is a no-no!
But like all mobile games, I doubt this will be a long service run. Let’s see to the end of the main story at the end of next year, then see the End of Service gracefully. I’m sure the whole game will be a fond memory in 10 years time. I bet the world will be in a much better place, too! See you then, future me!
