I am quite capable. Had I been summoned in a Caster Saint Graph, I would have been a Grand Caster

One of the most famous and influential tacticians in Chinese history, Taigong Wang, or Jiang Jiya, manifests in Fate Grand Order as a capable and versatile Damage Dealer / Support hybrid. Despite being a Quick-centric Rider, Jiang Jiya can find a good place in many different teams with his team wide buffs and is easily amongst the best anti-Divine units in the game.

Taigong Wang has a relatively straightforward but extremely potent skill set. All of his skills pack powerful and universal effects that make him quite versatile as well as splashable. Primitive Tactics A+ increases the entire team’s Quick Card effectiveness, Attack, and NP damage for 3 turns, effectively covering the 3 general types of damage buffs right off the bat. Fengshen Zhixing is Taigong Wang’s main utility tool in the form of Skill Seal, but also grants him anti-trait bonus damage against two highly common enemy traits in [Demonic] and [Divine], both for 3 turns as well. Last but not least, Thought Keys EX is a highly coveted personal and team-wide NP charger, increasing his own NP Gauge by 50% and his teammates by 20%. Taigong Wang’s Noble Phantasm - Dǎ Shén Biān EX further cements his anti-Divinity role as it deals significant AoE damage to enemies with Divine trait, and further decreases their Quick Resistance for 3 turns.

With his heavy AoE-centric and damage boosting focus kit, Taigong Wang naturally works best as a farming Servant. While he is capable of farming in the Double Skadi system, he shines best in multi-core farming as he offers competitive team wide buffs and NP Gauge charging, a luxury that many AoE farmers lack. Furthermore, Taigong Wang has one of the strongest anti-Divinity modifiers in the game, getting both bonus from his skill and Noble Phantasm. Divinity is quite common as a trait in both farming and challenge quests, giving Taigong Wang fantastic coverage and can deal mind-blowing damage even when he does not have Class Advantage.

However, Taigong Wang has some notable flaws that hold him back from entering the top DPS echelons. First of all, he has very little utility as well as defensive effects in his kit. A single Skill Seal in his second skill will rarely if ever matter in any tough situation. Furthermore, Taigong Wang’s innate refund is not particularly amazing. For many farming setups, he may struggle to get enough refund, especially against enemies with low refund rate like against Berserkers or in irregular enemy compositions. Last but not least, against enemies with no Divine or Demonic trait, Taigong Wang’s damage may lag behind other Riders as his low base modifier as well as lack of Critical performance buffs are quite notable.

As far as Riders go, any Master could do far worse than Taigong Wang, especially for any Masters looking to build up a multiple-Damage Dealers team that can support each other. Anti-Divinity and Demonic also rarely if ever goes out of favor due to the sheer amount of enemies with those traits, giving Taigong Wang a lot of value even with his other limitations.

🟢 Strengths

Strong Anti-Divine and Anti-Demonic Trait

Against Demonic and especially Divine enemies, there are few Servants with a better kit to handle them than Taigong Wang thanks to his second skill and Noble Phantasm. His NP damage spike against most Divine enemies can even approach Single-Target level despite being an AoE Noble Phantasm.

Strong Team Wide Buffing Effects

Taigong Wang has several strong team wide buffs that make him valuable in multi-DPS teams. In particular, he grants all three of the holy trinity of Damage boosts (Attack, Quick Card effectiveness, NP Damage) and an extremely useful teamwide NP Battery.

🔴 Weaknesses

No Defensive Utility

Taigong Wang has practically zero survivability in his skillset, either for him or his allies. His sole utility effect is a Skill Seal tied to his second skill, which has very few applications in practical situations.

Lackluster Damage Output Against Non-Divine and Non-Demonic Enemies

Against enemies without relevant traits, Taigong Wang’s damage drops significantly due to his lack of Critical niche and rather unimpressive NP modifier. This is also partly because of his rather mediocre NP refund, meaning his Craft Essence options usually have to have Starting NP Gauge as one of the main stats, reducing the opportunities to run hyper-offensive Craft Essences.

Level Up Skill Recommendations

HighSkillIcon
Primitive Tactics A+
Increase Quick Card effectiveness for all allies (3 turns). Increase ATK for all allies (3 turns). Increase NP Strength for all allies (3 turns).
HighSkillIcon
Fengshen Zhixing B
Inflict Skill Seal on all enemies (1 turn). Apply Special Attack [Demonic] to self (3 turns). Apply Special Attack [Divine] to self (3 turns).
HigherSkillIcon
Thought Keys EX
Increase own NP Gauge. Increase NP Gauge for all allies.

Taigong Wang is one of those Servants whose three skills all significantly affect his damage output. Of the three, his 3rd skill is the most important and should be maxed as soon as possible, while his two other skills can stay at Level 6 if resource constraints are a problem.

  • Primitive Tactics A+ Taigong Wang’s main offensive skill  and one of the very rare skills that grant three different buff modifiers. In Multi-DPS setups, this skill’s value rises significantly.
  • Fengshen Zhixing B – This skill gives Taigong Wang two very powerful anti-trait modifiers, letting him cover a wide array of enemies and stay relevant in many events and challenge quests. Both effect multipliers increase with skill level, so it should be raised in tandem with Skill 1 after maxing Skill 3 to improve his overall damage output.
  • Thought Keys EX – Very simple but powerful skill. The NP Gauge effect is incredibly valuable not just for other Damage Dealers, but can also help Support Servants get to their NPs even in farming setups, thus is of the highest priority of leveling.

🖼️ Craft Essence Recommendations

Starting NP Gauge should be the main stat that Masters look out for when choosing a CE for Taigong Wang, as his refund may struggle a bit in mixed-class farming nodes or enemies with low base refund rate. Quick Card Effectiveness, NP Damage, Attack and NP Generation Rate are all decent secondary stats to pick

  • Traces of Christmas / Imaginary Number Attribute / Cherry Icicle / One Summer / Golden Sumo: Easy to obtain Craft Essences (either through event or from the standard summoning pool) with Starting NP Gauge and good secondary stats that benefit Taigong Wang in most situations.
  • The Black Grail / Heaven’s Feel: Grants the biggest damage buff out of all Craft Essences for farming, but may require Masters to compensate in terms of NP Gauge through other means such as plug-suit and/or NP Battery Support.

Character Info

A legendary tactician from ancient China. Born Jiang Shang, he is also known as Shi Shangfu, Jiang Taigong, and Jiang Ziya. One day, he was fishing on the north bank of the Wei River when King Wen of the Zhou dynasty happened by. King Wen realized he had found the sage his father Taigong had been waiting for, and granted him the title "Taigong Wang," meaning "my father's wish." Taigong Wang was instrumental in King Wen and King Wu's efforts to overthrow the Yin dynasty. He was rewarded for his service with land on the Shangdon peninsula, which he turned into the state of Qi, where he served as ruler during the Spring and Fall Warring States period. In the Ming period novel "Fengshen Yanyi," or the "Investiture of the Gods," Taigong Wang is depicted as a Taoist practitioner with supernatural powers. According to Taigong Wang himself, "It's too bad, really. If I'd only been summoned as a Caster, I'd have definitely been Grand Caster."

Profile 1

Height/Weight: 179cm, 63kg Origin: History, "Records of the Grand Historian," "Investiture of the Gods," etc. Region: China Alignment: Neutral-Good Gender: Male According to legend, he's responsible for the phrase "You can't put spilled water back in the pot," the Chinese equivalent of "No sense crying over spilled milk"...though he always gets a sad look on his face whenever someone brings that up.

Profile 2

A tactician and general for the Zhou dynasty, a Taoist practitioner, and a disciple of Yuanshi Tianzun. As one who seals gods, he played a key role in dispatching a great killer of men and gods in both the human and sage worlds during the chaotic waning days of ancient China's Yin dynasty. Ultimately, as history tells, he helped King Wen and King Wu overthrow the Yin dynasty by leading their armies as both a Taoist and a tactician. He was later rewarded for his services by becoming the founder of the state of Qi. Primitive Tactics: A+ It is said that Taigong Wang devised and utilized tactical strategies before military science was even established as a field of study. He is also said to be the author of the Six Secret Teachings and the Three Strategies of Huang Shigon, two of China's Seven Military Classics.

Profile 3

Riding Skill: A+ Although Taigong Wang can ride Divine Beast-level Phantasmals all day long, he draws a hard line at dragonkin. "Have you seen those things!? No thank you!" Fengshen Zhixing: B Reflects Taigong Wang's role as a god sealer, enabling him to deal lots of damage to both Divine and Demonic enemies. Thought Keys: EX Taigong Wang is the disciple of Yuanshi Tianzun, the supreme being of the world of Tao, which makes him an expert Taoist in his own right. Uses Thought Keys, a kind of thought-based magecraft completely unlike anything found in Western magecraft, to perform sage arts and fangshu (i.e. Tao arts). As a figure from around 1000 B.C., the fact that these Thought Keys can even give Taigong Wang access to the protected memory space mean that they are effectively thought spells from the Age of Gods.

Profile 4

[Pseudo-Dragon Divine Beast Sì Bú Xiàng] Rank: A NP Type: Anti-Army Range: 1 - 50 Maximum Targets: 600 The Divine Beast Taigong Wang is said to ride in "Investiture of the Gods." Although other sages claim that Sì Bú Xiàng is a dragonkin, Taigong Wang is adamant that he is anything but. "Come on, you know I would never ride a dragonkin of all things." A continuously active riding Noble Phantasm that temporarily cloaks the user's mount in a mass of dragon-like magical energy, transforming its appearance and enabling it to take to the skies and lay waste to enemy armies with fiery breath. While Sì Bú Xiàng does transform and attack in this story, he does not generally make use of the army-annihilating abilities gained from releasing his True Name.

Profile 5

[Dǎ Shén Biān] Rank: EX NP Type: Anti-Divine Range: 0 - 90 Maximum Targets: 1 - 800 The God-Striking Whip. A Noble Phantasm bestowed upon Taigong Wang for his role as a god sealer. It also serves as the source for his Fengshen Zhixing skill. Apparently, there was once a limit on Taigong Wang's ability to make full use of this Noble Phantasm, but as a Heroic Spirit, that limit seems to no longer be an issue. Upon releasing its True Name, an enormous Dǎ Shén Biān descends from the skies and pulverizes the enemies in its path. Taigong Wang claims this power is entirely derived from releasing its True Name, but it could also be that he's performing a Xian-level spell by using Thought Keys to temporarily access protected memory space. Some also suspect that he's borrowing his own power from after he ascended into a Xian himself through his training. If that theory is true, it would mean that Taigong Wang the Rider is actually a Divided Spirit of the original Xian Taigong Wang, despite his claims that he's a Heroic Spirit from the Throne of Heroes. So, what IS the correct answer? Unfortunately, Taigong Wang refuses to say. It may well be that he doesn't know, either.

What do you think? Do I look good in it?
Ascension 2
I've undergone Ascension.
This body of mine may be made of ether, but I'm starting to get attached to it...
Ascension 3
Ah, this is more like it!
With this Spirit Origin, I feel like I can do anything!
Ha ha ha!
Ascension 4
I am humbled that you have accompanied me for this long.
It may not be at a Xian, a Taoist immortal level, but it still is an astonishing Spirit Origin.
Considering you've done so much for me until now, well...I shall work to meet your expectations.
Bond Level 1
Sage arts? Of course I can use them.
My current form is not from when I was a mere human, but from after I became a Taoist and went through arduous training in the sage world. I'll have you know I'm pretty good.
Had I been in a Caster Spirit Origin, I would surely have been a Grand Caster!
Bond Level 2
Master Yuanshi Tianzun...
I was certainly surprised when you ordered me to descend to Earth to seal gods. How could you tell me to leave the mountains after I had trained under you for decades!? Then again, you only ordered me to do so due to my own fate... I was destined to fight the Shang and take down Daji. It wasn't because I was fired, no.
Well, I never had the talent to master Taoism to begin with, and I was told that I could make a name for myself as a human if I managed to take down the Shang...
Bond Level 3
Oh? You want to know what happened to me after I took down the Shang?
Well...
Master Yuanshi Tianzun told me I could either go back to the mountains and try to hone my skills beyond my natural abilities to reach the level of a Taoist immortal, or I could choose to make a name for myself in the human world and spend the rest of my life in peace.
What I chose was...
Heh. Well, I wonder?
Bond Level 4
Daji...
It was certainly a terrifying beast. I heard it was a fox spirit, but I never thought it would be such a force to be reckoned with.
That's it. No further comment.
Hahaha. That's unacceptable?
Bond Level 5
Come again? What did you say I look like when I spy on Tamamo-type Heroic Spirits from afar?
Your word choice is erroneous. I have no interest in spying on young maidens from afar.
Listen. It's just that I sense the faint presence of Daji...
...
...Huh? What's that?
...I look like I'm on the verge of tears?
Who? Me?
...
Haha. That can't be true.
Conversation 1
Heading off somewhere?
I wouldn't mind going out.
Conversation 2
I, Taigong Wang Lu Shang, shall aid you.
As your master in fishing, that is.
Please leave it to me.
Conversation 3
The name Taigong Wang is synonymous with the word "fisherman."
That is why I shall go out fishing.
With you, of course.
Conversation 4 (Tamamo Cat)
Why, isn't that...?
Greetings, Lady Cat.
Conversation 5 (Tamamo-no-Mae, Tamamo (Lancer))
Daji!
Hah!
...Oh...
A-ah...! My apologies! I didn't realize it was you, Lady Tamamo-no-Mae.
I apologize for my rudeness...
Conversation 6 (Nezha)
Ah, Nezha!
You look cute as ever. Have you settled down and gotten less rambunctious? You haven't? I see.
Conversation 7 (Zhuge Liang (El-Melloi II))
Ah, Lord Zhuge Liang. So you practice fangshu as well?
Eh? You've always tried to conceal that? How dare I say such things in the presence of a member of the Clock Tower, the pinnacle of the Western Magecraft world...? Hahaha. What a thing to say Lord Zhuge Liang...what an uptight thing to say!
Conversation 8 (Sima Yi (Reines), Chen Gong)
Hmmm. Do you practice fangshu too? Well, do you?
Conversation 9 (Odysseus)
Odysseus...
So you are the legendary military strategist from the West. You seem a formidable opponent. Okay, let's have a match!
In backgammon!
Bring it on!
Conversation 10 (Kiichi Hogen)
Eh? Seriously? You deciphered the secret military arts I concealed as code in the "Three Strategies"?
Really!? Well, that's a surprise. I am truly impressed. Well done, Kiichi Hogen!
Conversation 11 (Merlin)
Oooh! Amazing! The flowers are blooming!
You are literally the Mage of Flowers, Lord Merlin. And you are certainly as handsome as the rumors say.
Then again...(stares).
I apologize if I offend you, but are you perhaps much more evil than you let on? Am I wrong?
Conversation 12 (EMIYA, EMIYA (Alter))
Lord Emiya. Is that...is that by chance the treasured sword Mò Yé? It's not?
Conversation 13 (Dobrynya Nikitich)
It's been a while, Nikitich.
Oh, I mean...it's a pleasure meeting you for the first time.
Conversation 14 (Katsushika Hokusai, Katsushika Hokusa (Saber))
Ah, a fairy, you say?
How wonderful! How bold, how fearless! Katsushika Hokusai in a swimsuit... Chaldea sure has all sorts of Servants.
Hm? Oh hello, original Katsushika Hokusai. Why are you blushing? What? The swimsuit you didn't train in the Taoist arts and calls herself a fairy simply as something she's striving to be?
I...see...
No, I think that's nice. Yes, I actually love that. Motivation is everything!
I do mean it! Keep on doing things like that! If need be, shall I change into a swimsuit too?
Likes
Do I have anything else other than fishing that I like?
Hmmm. Oh, well I do like you, Master.
So what shall I fish up today?
Dislikes
I am not fond of Lord Guan Yu! The one from The Three Kingdoms. The one with the Crescent Blade. After all, I was considered the symbol of military prowess, on par with Confucius as the symbol of philosophy. I was practically a god of war. But then around the Song dynasty, I started losing in popularity to Guan Yu.
Eh? I sound jealous?
No, no, no. Absolutely not.
About the Holy Grail
The Holy Grail... The object that grants wishes?
That sounds like trouble. I will distance myself from it.
During an Event
Oh, I hear a commotion!
Let's see... Ah, an event is happening.
Ah-ha! We should head out too, Master.
Birthday
Congratulations.
I heard from Lady Mash that today is apparently your birthday, Master. Ah, truly auspicious!
Well then...
Yes! Let us have a banquet!
I shall serve the very best nectars and Immortal Peaches for you!
Summon
I have manifested in the Rider Spirit Origin.
My True Name is Taigong Wang!
Oh, you can also call me Lu Shang, or Jiang Ziya, or Grand Duke Jiang... Whatever you like.
It's too bad, really.
If I'd only been summoned as a Caster, I'd have definitely been Grand Caster.
