MMM - Flagrant Fake-out Finds "Fans" Furious, For Faux Feline Fighter Founds Financial Misfortune (Strange/Fake Collab 2)

Intro
Ah yes, the collab event that always happens at the same time every year in FGO and always runs its story over the duration of Golden Week would suddenly stop, leaving a dozen interesting story threads to lead to nothing, disappointing the fans in a spectacular fashion.
Of course not! I’d hope none of you genuinely believed the Prelati-focused intro to this event was all Narita had to offer. It’s a Strange Fake - roll the intro film. And say that again, for good measure.
That said, we have the long-delayed and curious lion-man silhouette to unveil, and unsurprisingly they’re an English King. Did the Corgis not tip us off?

John Lackland
It’s him, the man who sold the country - John Lackland.
I have to say, when so many monarchs of antiquity have such imposing titles like “The Great”, “King of Kings”, or “Lionheart”, it has to stink that you get slapped with “Lackland” of all things - literally embodying your failure to hold any of your nation’s territory or wealth.
It’s not strictly all John I’s fault, though. Richard’s involvement in the crusades and, well, habit of getting captured and needing a ransom resulted in a hefty debt for the English Crown of the time, which naturally resulted in a good ‘ol Medieval recession. No wonder he had to introduce heavy-handed taxation which nearly tore the country apart to rebellion, not only creating the tales of folk heroes like Robin Hood, but also made the Magna Carta by necessity, one of the earliest preserved records of foundational law in a nation.
So while Richard in his bombastic mannerisms and battle-born fame might stand out more as a King, John here is arguably more influential for the legacy of the English crown, despite being a figure of tyrannical kings who mismanage their lands. That’s your little piece of English history for today.
John already manages to stand out as an SSR Avenger by entirely bucking the trend of the class’s statline, possessing the largest HP stat of any Avenger by a huge margin, at the natural cost of a miserable attack stat - it’s even lower than Gorgon’s in spite of the rarity gap! That isn’t to say the Attack stat he packs is poor, though - After the Avenger Attack modifier factored in, it’s still higher than most SSR Servants, but most of the time you’d prefer overwhelming offense over middling offense and solid bulk.
On the Passive skill side of the equation, John unsurprisingly packs the Avenger class standard trio - Oblivion Correction for increased Critical Damage, Avenger to raise his defensive NP gain at the cost of allied Debuff Resistance, and Self-Restoration for a very useful modicum of NP gauge each turn. John’s rankings on all these skills are pretty high across the board, so he nets quite the benefits even from only these Class Skills.
So how does ‘ol John here weigh up? On one hand, he’s got royal authority backing him, and a determination to rule…to rule, yeah, let’s go with that:
- +John, despite the reputation of the Avenger class, has a pretty broad suite of supportive tools at his disposal. An ally target Gauge Charge and Skill Cooldown Reduction is pretty potent in the right situations, as is his collection of team buffs - some Attack Up here, a little Critical Damage there, and even some complimentary Curse damage that gets converted into healing. Thank god he has something to him besides dealing damage, cos…
Conversely, John is a walking disaster for king and country both, a menace who truly embodies a dark shadow falling upon his nation’s history:
- -In spite of belonging to the class that is supposed to embody pure offense, John really doesn’t hit very hard. His lower than normal Attack stat is one contributing factor, but the offensive boosts he gets to his NP aren’t particularly impressive, and even seem tampered to avoid giving him too high a damage boost in his ideal circumstances - that Neutral Effective Damage buff is pretty low in value, and as it’s a buff, and not a modifier on his NP, it is essentially treated the same as NP Strength buffs, resulting in additive damage, not multiplicative. And his NP itself meets the same issue - his increased NP Strength buffs do have some Oberon synergy, but they’d be better off as Effective Damage multipliers on the NP itself, similarly missing out on a multiplicative boost. All these factors mean not only does John not perform well for farming, but is pretty solidly outclassed by most other Avengers for the same reason.
- -John’s issues with offensive output isn’t just limited to his NP, however. Across his kit, the man packs a number of Critical Damage buffs that, while small individually, do add up to a solid amount of Critical Damage when combined, potentially opening another niche for him. But there’s two crucial problems with it - John’s star generation is good, but nowhere good enough to supply himself consistently, and secondly - he has no way of boosting his star weight by himself. Both of those issues combined means either he has to lean on external star weight boosts to actually soak up a 100% crit, or generate 50 stars on every turn. Huge asks for a relatively mild payoff. You know Monte Cristo gets to have one of the hardest hitting NP’s in the game while also doing great consistent critical damage, himself? Sheesh.
As you might expect from that huge disparity in positives and negatives, John Lackland is not a particularly great Servant. He fails to take advantage of the biggest positives of his class, and in turn lets its flaws hamper him at every turn. Add in a collection of skills whose numbers are surprisingly undertuned, and it’s not a big surprise he struggles to pass the bar for the most basic roles an offensive AOE Servant can fill.
And let’s not get into how his two niche damage boosts fail to actually convert to impactful improvements to his performance. To put that into perspective, in the same conditions pitted against Maou Nobu (Nobu facing a Divine, Heaven attribute foe, John facing a Neutral Sovereign), Nobu dishes out 50k damage baseline to John’s 30k. John is doing only 60% of Nobu’s damage output, despite being a supposedly new and powercreeped Servant.
Realistically, there’s no world you’d want John for gameplay reasons unless you’re lacking an Avenger in general. Liz of the End fills that role pretty well, and for free.
As a historical figure, I do really like John Lackland, but as an FGO Servant, he’s unfortunately also lacking…
Outro
We got our mystery figure out of the way rather quickly, no? Makes me wonder if there’s even more lying around the corner for this event. There’s quite a lot of interesting figures teased in the intro movie, after all.
But I have things to do, so like Godspeed I’ll take off, and leave the MMM at that!
is there a reason kscope double koyan looping was chosen over a triple support bg team? He's got more than enough battery for that and it helps w the damage
